Sacramento Republic FC News Release
SACRAMENTO, Calif. - Sacramento Republic FC is partnering with Susan G. Komen Northern & Central California to host "More Than Pink Night' on Saturday, May 12, during the club's match against Reno 1868 FC at Papa Murphy's Park. The event, which is the first partnership of its kind with any Sacramento professional sports team, will benefit the foundation and celebrate local survivors. Gates will open at 6 p.m. and the match will kick off at 7:30 p.m.
"We're thrilled to partner with Sacramento Republic FC," said Kelly Mac Millen, Executive Director at Susan G. Komen Northern & Central California. "For us, it's an opportunity to be partnered with a well-known family organization that can help get the message out about awareness and early intervention around breast health, and also show that they care as a community."
"There is no better way for our players, fans and organization to celebrate Mother's Day weekend than by partnering with Susan G. Komen and raising awareness for a cause that affects so many in our community," said Republic FC Chief Operating Officer Ben Gumpert. "The breast cancer survivors we will be honoring exemplify the indomitable spirit of our team and our city."
Republic FC will be honoring local breast cancer survivors throughout the night. Prior to kickoff, players will walk out to the field accompanied by breast cancer survivors and the match will also include a halftime ceremony in their honor. To help drive awareness for breast cancer, Papa Murphy's Park will feature pink goal nets, corner flags and field markings, while players will wear pink socks during the game.
Fans can purchase a special ticket package to the match through SacRepublicFC.com that includes an exclusive Republic FC "More Than Pink' scarf, admission to the game and halftime recognition. Proceeds from sales will be donated to Komen.
"More Than Pink Night' will take place hours after the first annual "More Than Pink Walk' being held by Susan G. Komen at Cal Expo on the morning of May 12. The club will be sponsoring the children's area at the event, which will feature a meet and greet with players.
"It means the world to us to be able to partner with an organization like Susan G. Komen," said Republic FC defender Justin Schmidt, whose aunt and grandmother are breast cancer survivors. "I was too young to help out with my Nanny or Aunt Connie, but knowing now that we can help another family, maybe another kid in my position, by bringing up the idea to get a screening and potentially help save a life, as that kid it would mean the world just seeing anyone take the time to help save the life of someone so close to me."
"That their players are sharing their stories means the fans will be thinking about the fact that they should be getting screened," said Mac Millen. "It helps builds community awareness and a feeling that breast cancer isn't scary if everyone is talking about a cancer that affects so many people."
