Brantford Bulldogs News Release

HAMILTON, ONTARIO. The Hamilton Bulldogs opened the Game 1 of the OHL Finals on home ice against the Western Conference Champion Windsor Spitfires marking the beginning of the first ever playoff series between these two franchises.

With the two most explosive offensive teams in the Ontario Hockey League from both the regular season and playoffs in action, it was the goaltenders who stole the show in the opening frame with Xavier Medina turning aside 7 early shots and 8 in all in the opening frame including a deflected shot off the right point he was able to kick aside off his toe. In the second half of the first period a parade to the penalty box for the Bulldogs with 3-minutes of 5-on-3 time for Windsor while Marco Costantini stood on his head racking up 10 saves in the opening period sending the teams to the intermission scoreless.

The offences opened up in the second period, Avery Hayes struck first for his 9th goal of the playoffs at 11:50, after Logan Morrison fed the puck from the left circle to Mason McTavish for a one-timer on the right, McTavish's shot rattled off the end boards coming out front for Hayes to fly through the crease and knock home giving Hamilton the 1-0 lead. Just :49 later, Nathan Ribau & Wyatt Johnston combined to get the puck to Will Cuylle in the slot to tie the game 1-1. Before the second period was out and just after a Bulldogs' power-play had expired, Mason McTavish fed the puck from the right circle low to George Diaco who located Colton Kammerer stepping off the left point for the captain to record his first of the playoffs at 18:26 staking the Bulldogs ahead 2-1 after 40 minutes, with Costantini stopping 18 of 19 at one end and Medina turning aside 26 of 28 at the other while the Bulldogs lost Jan Mysak for the remainder of the game due to injury in the period.

Scoreless to the halfway point of the third period, the Bulldogs entered the Windsor zone on a 3-on-2 as Jorian Donovan dealt the puck to Patrick Thomas left and raced down the middle of the ice, Thomas found Mark Duarte open cross-zone and the winger rifled a shot past Medina for his 2nd of the playoffs at 10:11 giving the Bulldogs a 3-1 lead. Windsor mounted the comeback from there, after a tough interference call on Colton Kammerer, Will Cuylle recorded his 2nd of the game at 12:30 to draw the Spitfires back to within one. At 17:30 drifting left over the Hamilton blue line, Oliver Peer whipped his 4th of the playoffs into the Bulldogs net, tying the game 3-3. Avery Hayes just moments later strode over the Windsor line on a steal and beat Medina high but rattled the puck off the underside of the front crossbar.

With the teams knotted at 3-3 through 60, it was off to overtime.

After starting the game without Nathan Staios and loosing Jan Mysak earlier in the game, things would go from bad to worse for the Bulldogs in overtime. A Daniil Sobolev hit on Mason McTavish sent the Bulldogs center down the tunnel, removing another major piece from the Bulldogs offence and after both teams were unsuccessful on the man advantage in overtime, Arber Xhekaj was assessed a 5-minute major for a hit from behind on Windsor's Daniel D'Amico and a game misconduct, though D'Amico briefly exited the game he would return to the ice before the end. With the man-advantage just past the halfway mark, it was former Bulldogs defensemen Michael Renwick who worked off the left circle and roofed the overtime winner, giving the Windsor Spitfires a 1-0 series lead.

The Hamilton Bulldogs return to action for Game 2 of the OHL Championship on Sunday, June 5th looking to even the series with a 2:00pm start time.
