Reno Rallies Late, Edges Outlaws 10-9

July 3, 2008 - Golden Baseball League (GBL)
Chico Outlaws News Release

RENO, NV - Derrick Landavazo began the day as part of the Chico Outlaws pitching staff...but following a trade that sent him to Reno, Landavazo tossed two scoreless innings of relief against his old mates to pick up the win as the Silver Sox rallied from two runs down to defeat the Outlaws 10-9 Wednesday night at Peccole Park on the University of Nevada, Reno campus.

The Silver Sox opened the scoring with a run in the bottom of the 1st - Outlaws starter Berek Fasking hit Gary Harris with a pitch; Harris, the Golden Baseball League's leading base stealer, swiped second and third and came home on Ryan Brown's groundout to second. Chico answered in the top of the 2nd - Steve Boggs delivered a two-out RBI single to tie the score...then Jesse Kovacs tripled to knock in Boggs and Matt Ceriani to put the Outlaws in front 3-1. Ryan Crespi's RBI single in the bottom of the 2nd pulled Reno to within a run...but in the 3rd Chico went up 6-2 on a solo homer by Jose Valdez and a two-run shot by Lino Garcia. The Outlaws lead didn't last long, as the Silver Sox combined three hits, a sacrifice fly and a costly Chico throwing error on a squeeze bunt to plate five runs in the bottom of the 3rd and go back on top 7-6.

That's the way it stayed until the 7th when the Outlaws once again pulled ahead - with two outs and runners at the corners, Boggs knocked in the tying run with a single up the middle...but when Harris misplayed the ball in center field, Ceriani came all the way around from first to score to once again give Chico the lead. Boggs would promptly steal second and score on a Scott Schneider wild pitch to it a 9-7 ballgame. But in the bottom of the 7th Reno knotted up the contest when D.J. Dixon launched a two-run homer off Outlaws reliever Rudy Quinonez. Landavazo came on to retire Chico in order in the 8th...and in the bottom of the inning the Silver Sox plated what turned out to be the game-winner as Harris singled, stole second and scored on Ross McCoy's double to center. The Outlaws made it interesting in the 9th - after Landavazo retired the first two batters, Casey Garrison delivered a pinch-hit single and Todd Gossage lined a base hit down the right field line...but with the potential tying run 90 feet away, Landavazo got Boggs to ground out to second to end the game and give Reno their fifth win in their last eight games and handing Chico their eighth loss in the last 10 contests.

Landavazo (1-0) got credit for the victory, while Outlaws reliever Rob Ellis (2-3) took the loss. The Outlaws piled up a dozen hits in the losing effort - Kovacs and Boggs leading the way with three hits apiece...Dixon went 3-for-4 and knocked in three runs to pace the Silver Sox; Harris and McCoy each had two hits on the night. The loss dropped Chico to 11-23 on the season while Reno improved to 12-21. The Outlaws look for the series split Thursday as they send left-hander Beau Hintz (0-1) to the mound; the Silver Sox will counter with righty Chris Fields (1-0). First pitch is 7:05pm...hear all the action with Rory Miller calling the play-by-play on ESPN Radio 101.7 FM and AM 1340; the game can also be heard on-line at www.ChicoOutlawsBaseball.com.
