Gober, Armada hold Flyers in check

July 3, 2008 - Golden Baseball League (GBL)
Orange County Flyers News Release

Dustin Gober came in with an ERA above ten but found a way to quiet the Orange County Flyers and their league best offense.

Gober allowed just two runs in six innings including retiring thirteen straight batters as the Long Beach Armada (15-18) salvaged the final game of a three game series with the Flyers (23-10) as they won 6-3 Thursday night at Goodwin Field.

Gober managed to hold the Flyers and allowed center fielder Steve Moss to do most of the damage as Moss went 2-5 with two RBI.

Flyers starter Jeremy Zick matched Gober until only allowing one run until the Armada got to him and the Flyers bullpen and defense in the sixth.

Steve Moss wasted little time getting the scoring going, as he launched a one out homer to left center giving the Armada a 1-0 lead.

The Flyers got back into the game right away as Mark Okano was beaned, David Bacani walked, and Patrick Breen followed with a single through the right side to score Okano and tie the game at 1. Dustin Gober was able to force the Flyers into a mistake as he caught Breen running before Cleatus Davidson threw out Bacani trying to take home.

But the pitching prevailed for the next four innings as both pitchers kept both teams off the board.

That was until Norm Hutchins chased Zick from the game in the sixth with a leadoff single as Zick's pitch count approached 100. Tony Torcato was able to cash Hutchins in with a single to right field.

After three complete innings of zeroes, Moss broke the silence delivering a single into left field, scoring Davidson and putting Dan Trumble on third to give the Armada their second lead of the game. The Armada then got another run as Zick picked off Moss but opened the window for Trumble to come home.

Gober retired 13 straight batters from the second to fifth innings, before Gabe Mayorga led the sixth off with a single. Bacani reached on a single in front of Breen who doubled in Mayorga.

The Flyers got one more in the eighth as LaRue grounded to second where Davidson forced out Acey but Glomb's throw to first was wide allowing Bacani to score from second.

The Armada grabbed two runs off of Dane De La Rosa in the ninth on the back of two errors, the second a throwing error that would have ended the inning, instead both Davidson and Trumble scored to give the Armada a three run lead in the ninth.
