Reno Aces Game Notes at Salt Lake
May 27, 2018 - Pacific Coast League (PCL1)
Reno Aces News Release
Today's Game: The Aces are looking for their first win against the Bees in 2018 tonight. Greg Gross will send southpaw Anthony Vasquez to the mound to make his second start of the season. Vasquez is hoping to slow down the Salt Lake bats after their 16-hit, 11-run explosion last night.
About Last Night: Salt Lake brought their bats on Saturday night, totaling 11 runs on 16 hits. The Aces tallied three extra-base hits (Reinheimer HR, Puello HR, and Fuentes 3B). Jake Buchanan earned the loss, finishing with 3.1 IP, 11 H, 8 R, and 8 ER. Joey Krehbiel, Braden Shipley and Silvino Bracho tossed the remaining 4.2 innings and allowed three runs.
"How do you fine a bat boy?": On this day in 1984, Portland Beavers bat boy Sam Morris is thrown out of a game by umpire Pam Postema for refusing to retrieve a folding chair that his ejected manager Lee Elia had hurled into right field during an animated tirade. The 14 year-old junior high school student, who declined to follow the arbitrator's directive out of loyalty to his skipper, will not have to pay the $25 fine which is usually automatic for being tossed from a PCL game. Bill Cutler, the President of the PCL at the time, was quoted saying "How do you fine a bat boy?"
Too Hot To Handle: The temperature at first pitch last night was 79 degrees in downtown Salt Lake City. The Aces have played 16 games this season when it's 70 degrees or warmer and seven games when the temperature is over 80. Reno is 2-5 when it's 80 degrees+ and have been outscored 47-30.
North Shore Monster: Cesar Puello loves hitting in Salt Lake City. Throughout his career, Puello is batting .373 (47-for-126) at Smith's Ballpark with 29 runs scored, 7 doubles, 7 home runs and 24 RBI. As a member of the Bees, Puello hit a remarkable .397 in 44 games with 7 home runs. At Greater Nevada Field this season, he is batting .295 with four runs scored. His home run last night was his first since April 16 at Fresno (41 days ago).
Against All Odds: By the time tonight's starting pitcher Anthony Vasquez checked in with a trainer at the Seattle Mariners' training complex in Arizona in 2012, complaining of headaches and vision problems, a ruptured blood vessel in his brain had been leaking for days. Vasquez had a 51/2-hour emergency brain surgery at St. Joseph's Hospital in Phoenix and returned to baseball in 2013 making 15 starts.
Last but not least: With three runs in the top of the 9th inning last night, Reno has scored last in a game 29 times this season. The Aces are 12-17 when scoring last (.414) and have the second-lowest winning percentage in the Pacific Coast League when doing so. The Las Vegas 51's are 7-11 when scoring the final runs of a contest (.389). Salt Lake is 18-10 (.643) when scoring last, fourth best in the league.
