Reno Aces News Release

Today's Game: Left-hander Alex Young will make his second career Triple-A start tonight and first against the Nashville Sounds. He'll square off against former Aces southpaw Eric Jokisch. Jokisch went 8-8 in 28 appearances with Reno in 2017 and finished the season with a 4.21 ERA. Kevin Cron will make his first appearance since being named the Pacific Coast League Player of the Week Monday. Cron led all professional baseball last week (Minor and Major League players) with 14 RBI and eight extra-base hits. In six games, he also totaled the most bases (26) in the PCL, while matching the League-high in home runs (4).

Last Game: Joel Payamps made use of his first Triple-A start of the year, tossing four innings of one-hit, no-run baseball. The Aces jumped out to a quick 5-0 lead through two innings of play. Ildemaro Vargas led the charge offensively, finishing 3-for-5 with a double and an RBI. The 8-4 win moves Reno to a record of 25-33 this season and 14-15 at Greater Nevada Field. Reno won the series against their in-state rivals three games to two.

Game of Cron's: Kevin Cron hit .357 (10-for-28), last week, with a 1.286 OPS (.357 on-base percentage, .929 slugging percentage) and scored five runs. The Diamondbacks farmhand was the catalyst for an Aces offense in a May 28 win against Salt Lake; he finished a triple shy of the cycle, going three-for-five with three RBI and two runs scored. Two days later, he mashed a two-run homer in a win over Las Vegas, part of a two-hit game. His best run-producing game of the week - and for his career - came on May 31. Cron drove in six, hitting a pair of doubles and a home run in the Aces 20-3 win. The 25-year-old capped his week and assisted to another Reno win by recording a two-run home run on June 3.

Drafted: The Arizona Diamondbacks selected INF Matt McLain from Beckman (Calif.) High School with the 25th pick in the 2018 Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft last night. In 26 games as a senior at Beckman High School in 2018, McLain, 18, hit .369 (31-for-84)/.461 OBP/.595 SLG with 6 doubles, 2 triples, 3 home runs, 14 RBI and 16 walks, playing primarily as a shortstop. He was named First-Team All-Pacific Coast League in each of his 4 years of high school, including conference Player of the Year honors twice (2015, '18). The 5-foot-10, 175-pounder bats and throws right-handed. He is a native of Tustin, Calif., and is committed to attending UCLA in the fall.

On This Day In Baseball History: On this day in 1974, Oakland outfielder Reggie Jackson, tired of being picked on by Billy North, tackled his A's teammate in the Tiger Stadium clubhouse, starting a nasty fight which results in some costly injuries. In addition to Jackson injuring his shoulder, Ray Fosse, attempting to separate the brawlers, crushed a disk in the catcher's neck that virtually ends his season.

Back to the Bay: The Arizona Diamondbacks selected utility veteran Kristopher Negrón's from Reno and optioned OF Sócrates Brito to Reno yesterday afternoon. Negrón, 32, batted .259 (44-for-170)/.355 OBP/.382 SLG with 8 doubles, 2 triples, 3 home runs, 13 RBI, 21 walks and 4 stolen bases in 55 games for the Aces this season. Over his last 14 games since May 20, he hit .438 (21-for-48)/.491 OBP/.604 SLG with 4 doubles, 2 triples and 5 RBI, recording 7 multi-hit efforts. He hit .282 (37-for-131)/.379 OBP/.389 SLG with 6 doubles, 1 triple, 2 home runs, 9 RBI and 16 walks vs. right-handed pitching. Defensively, he made 25 appearances at second base, 16 at third, 7 in right field, 4 in center, and 1 at shortstop. Negron is a native of Fairfield, CA, 61 miles from AT&T Park where the D-backs are playing the Giants.
