Hudson Valley Renegades News Release
WAPPINGERS FALLS, N.Y. - The Hudson Valley Renegades were swept in a doubleheader by the Jersey Shore BlueClaws at Dutchess Stadium on Wednesday night. The Renegades fell in both games by a final score of 2-1.
Playing as the road team in the opener, Matt Sauer led the Renegades with a masterful pitching performance. Coming off of being named South Atlantic League Pitcher of the Week on Monday, Sauer threw 6.0 shutout innings, striking out five while scattering four hits and two walks.
In his last four starts, Sauer has allowed only two earned runs in 25.2 innings, and has strung together 14.1 consecutive scoreless frames.
The Renegades took a 1-0 lead in the top of the fourth on a sacrifice fly from Anthony Seigler, scoring Cooper Bowman. That score held until the bottom of the seventh, when the BlueClaws rallied against Ryan Miller.
Carlos De La Cruz homered with two outs to tie the game, then after a D.J. Stewart single and stolen base, Freylin Minyety singled to left, scoring Stewart with the winning run.
It was the first time this season that the Renegades have lost in walk-off fashion, and ironically it came at Dutchess Stadium with Jersey Shore serving as the home team owing to the game being a make-up of a game originally scheduled for ShoreTown Ballpark.
In the nightcap, Leif Strom made his Yankees organizational debut, and turned in a solid outing. He struck out eight in 3.2 innings, allowing two runs on two hits, walking three and hitting one batter.
Both runs against Strom came home in the top of the third, when Karl Ellison scored on a wild pitch, and Ethan Wilson drove in Uziel Viloria with a double to right.
Hudson Valley struck back with a run in the bottom of the fifth against Griff McGarry. Pat DeMarco singled and advanced to second on a wild pitch. After getting to third on a flyout, Cristian Perez brought him home with a sacrifice fly to left to cut the deficit to 2-1.
After Nelson Alvarez and Nelvin Correa kept it close with 3.1 scoreless innings of relief, the Gades pushed the tying run to third base in the bottom of the seventh. However, pinch-hitter Eric Wagaman flew out to center to end the game.
Hudson Valley continues its series with Jersey Shore on Thursday night at Dutchess Stadium. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m, with coverage on the Renegades Baseball Network beginning at 6:45. RHP Beck Way (2-2, 5.40) gets the start for the Renegades, opposed by RHP Cristian Hernandez (2-2, 6.09) for the BlueClaws.
