Ontario Reign News Release
ONTARIO, Calif.- The Ontario Reign, proud affiliate of the NHL's Los Angeles Kings, announce they have placed defensemen Iain McPhee and Jeff MacPhee on waivers, released forward August Aiken from his tryout agreement, suspended Travis Gawryletz, and signed Jean-Philippe Cote and Matt Tassone.
McPhee, 25, most recently played five games in his first CHL playoff appearance with the Wichita Thunder after spending the regular season playing for the Allen Americans, the 2011 league champions. McPhee posted a total of 12 points (12a) in 53 games with 79 penalty minutes with the Americans. Since starting his minor league career in 2001, the ECHL will be the sixth league in which McPhee has played; previously defending for teams in the OPJHL, OHL, AUS, IHL and CHL.
MacPhee, a recent Reign signing, split his 2010-11 season between Mississippi Surge, Colombus Cottonmouths, and the Bloomington PrairieThunder. He racked up 124 penalty minutes in 46 games and 7 points (2g, 5a).
Aiken, 29, returned to hockey after two years away from the game. The Whittier, California native had recorded 131 points (52g, 79a) in 175 BCHL junior contests from 2005 to 2008 and two goals in 19 collegiate games with the University of Alaska-Anchorage in the 2008-09 season.
Gawryletz, 25, has signed a contract with the ELH's Karlovy Vary HC in the Czech Republic. The Reign have suspended the defenseman and retained his ECHL rights.
The Reign have added two more players to the team, defenseman Jean-Philippe Cote and center Matt Tassone.
Cote, 29, comes from playing 39 games over two seasons in the German elite hockey league (DEL), preceded by six seasons in the AHL. During the 2005-06 season the Quebec native played eight games in the NHL for the Montreal Canadiens. Cote was a ninth round pick for the Toronto Maple Leafs in the 2000 NHL Draft.
Tassone, 22, was selected by the Dallas Stars round in the sixth round (#176 overall) in the 2008 NHL Entry Draft. He joins the Reign after spending the 2010-11 season with the ECHL's Idaho Steelheads. In 32 games, the center tallied 10 points (7g, 3a) and 55 penalty minutes. Prior to playing in the ECHL, Tassone played in the WHL with the Swift Current Broncos for five seasons recording 119 points (73g, 46a) in 187 games.
