Ontario Reign News Release
ONTARIO, Calif. - The Ontario Reign (28-13-3-4), four-time Pacific Division Champions and proud affiliate of the NHL's 2014 Stanley Cup Champion Los Angeles Kings and Winnipeg Jets, defeated the Allen Americans (32-8-2-2) by a 4-1 score in front of a crowd of 6,139 on Tuesday night at Citizens Business Bank Arena.
Despite facing an early penalty kill situation for too many men on the ice, Ontario's special teams immediately went to work. After taking a pass from Ralfs Freibergs, Matt White skated into the offensive zone and darted to the inside, tucking the puck underneath Riley Gill for a shorthanded tally at 2:02.
White connected again minutes later at even strength, when Maxim Kitsyn carried the puck beneath the Allen goal line, and then threaded a backdoor feed to White, who one-timed the shot into the net at 7:13.
The Reign carried the two-goal lead into the second period, until Aaron Gens scored on the power-play for Allen, by banking a shot off the crossbar and into the net past Daniel Spence at 6:47.
In the third period, an injury to Spence forced Spencer McLay to come off the bench and take over between the pipes for Ontario at 7:27.
The Reign gave their goaltender some insurance when Rocco Carzo knocked a backhand shot underneath the pads of Gill during a goalmouth scramble, and Robert Czarnik sealed the victory for Ontario when he scored an empty-net goal at 19:56.
Spence earned the victory with 28 saves, while McLay turned aside all 10 shots he faced in relief; Gill took the loss with 26 stops.
Three Stars:
1. ONT - Matt White
2. ONT - Rocco Carzo
3. ONT - Daniel Spence
