Reign FC Host Washington Spirit in Final Home Match of 2016

September 9, 2016 - National Women's Soccer League (NWSL)
Seattle Reign FC News Release

SEATTLE- In their final home match at Memorial Stadium this season, Seattle Reign FC will host the Washington Spirit . This is the second game in a row between the two teams, and their final meeting this season.

The game will be live-streamed on the NWSL's official YouTube channel and can be watched at youtube.com/nwsl . Fans can also follow live play-by-play at Reign FC's official Twitter page, @SeattleReignFC, and can join the conversation using the hashtag #SEAvWAS.

Reign FC's (6-6-6, 24 points) previous match was a 2-1 loss against the Washington Spirit. The loss was the fifth one goal loss for Seattle this season.

"I think there were some positives in the performance on Wednesday," said Seattle Reign FC head coach Laura Harvey. "We need to turn some of the positive performance parts into a positive result, and we're fully focused on that."

Seattle has an all-time regular-season record of 5-4-1 against Washington, with three of those wins coming at home. Reign FC has only lost two matches at Memorial Stadium this season. They have not lost at home since May 22, when they fell 2-1 against the Chicago Red Stars.

Reign FC has scored twice the amount of goals at home this season as they have on the road, scoring 16 goals at Memorial Stadium and just eight goals in road games. The club is currently on an NWSL-record scoring streak, scoring in their last 16 matches at home.

"Memorial is always a special place for us," said Harvey. "Our last game here was a phenomenal crowd and the atmosphere was great and I don't expect it to be any different [on Sunday]."

Seattle's attack has recently relied on Manon Melis, but the forward was held to just one shot in Wednesday's match. Melis has scored five goals in the past six games, and is the team-leader in goals with six.

Along with the Western New York Flash and the Chicago Red Stars, Seattle Reign FC is competing for one of the final two 2016 playoff spots. Depending on other results this weekend, a win on Sunday could potentially put Seattle two points out of fourth place.

However, should Western New York and Chicago both avoid losses on Sunday, Seattle would be eliminated from the playoffs no matter what result they earn against Washington.

"We drew against Chicago and it still meant we had a fighting chance and then losing against Washington we though that would probably be it, but mathematically we're still in it," said Harvey. "As long as we're mathematically still in it we're going to fight to the end to make sure we keep that possibility alive."

Washington (12-3-3, 39 points) is in first place on the NWSL table. The Spirit have already clinched a playoff spot, and will host an NWSL semi-final match for the first time in club history. Washington is in the running to win this season's NWSL Shield for the best regular season record.

As the Spirit prepare to head into the postseason, they will hope that Crystal Dunn can build on the momentum from her first goal on the season, which she scored on Wednesday against Reign FC.
