Reign Fall to Gulls in Final Preseason Matchup; Regular Season Starts Saturday

Anaheim, CA - Forward Nic Dowd netted a goal and an assist as the Ontario Reign (0-1-0-1) completed the preseason tonight with a 5-3 loss to the San Diego Gulls (2-0-0-0) at the Honda Center, home to the Gulls' National Hockey League (NHL) affiliate, the Anaheim Ducks.

After a scoreless first period, the two sides erupted for six goals in the second period. The Gulls opened the scoring 3:41 into the frame as forward Chris Muller snuck a shot past Reign goaltender Michael Houser (L, 25 saves on 29 shots). Seconds later, Dowd evened the score unassisted at 5:57. The Gulls retaliated with three markers to take a 4-1 lead late into the period. Defenseman Shea Theodore reclaimed the lead at 7:13 followed by a power-play marker from forward Nick Ritchie at 11:47. Moments later, forward Brian McGrattan gave the Gulls a three-goal advantage at 14:31. With 19 seconds left on the clock, Reign defenseman Kevin Gravel buried a power-play goal over the shoulder of Gulls netminder John Gibson (W, 16 saves on 19 shots) with help from Dowd.

Gulls forward Stefan Noesen (18:31) added an empty-net goal late in the third period to seal the victory, but Reign forward Johnny Brodzinsky picked up the last maker at 19:47 to complete the game scoring. Both teams finished the contest 1-for-5 on the power play.

The Reign open the 2015-16 regular season on Saturday, October 10 against the Bakersfield Condors at 7:00 p.m. at Rabobank Arena in Bakersfield, California.
