Spokane Chiefs News Release
The Spokane Chiefs continue to inch their way towards the opening of the WHL season this week with two more pre-season games and a handful of practices at Eagles Ice-Arena.
Spokane will travel to Kennewick on Thursday to take on the Everett Silvertips in the Tri-City Americans pre- season tournament. Saturday night, the Chiefs will play the Americans. Both games begin at 7:00.
The club is coming off a 1-2 weekend in Everett with a win over the host Silvertips and a pair of losses to Portland and Tri-City.
"From my standpoint, the tournament went really well," Chiefs Head Coach Hardy Sauter recalled. "The young guys played extremely hard and showed they had lots of talent. Although we lost two of the three games, our effort and amount of offensive opportunities we created was a real positive sign."
The Chiefs roster was sprinkled with rookies, including four 1993 born players. In one game, Spokane skated with 12 first-year players and Sauter indicated they have had followed the lead the veterans have set.
"Our returning players have been our hardest workers," he said about the first two weeks of camp. "Obviously when they see good players working hard, hopefully they will put one-and-one together and follow suit. To be successful, that has to be the case; our best players have to work the hardest. It is much easier for me to not have to dictate or request that that be the case. If anything, I'm going to have to back those guys off so we have enough left over for games."
The Chiefs will play one home pre-season game; Friday, September 12th when they host the Kelowna Rockets at Eagles Ice-A-Rena.
Spokane will play the first game in the WHL regular season when they travel to Cranbrook to take on the Kootenay Ice on Thursday, September 18th.
The home portion of the regular season will begin on Saturday, September 27th when the Chiefs host the Tri-City Americans on Bud Light Opening Night. The Chiefs and The Black Book by Hagadone Directories will be handing out replica banners to the first 3,000 fans through the gates as well as full season ticket holders.
Tickets for alls home games will go on sale Thursday, September 4th at 9:00 am at the Chiefs office or by calling TicketsWest at (800) 325-SEAT.
