Birmingham Barons News Release
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - The Birmingham Barons are proud to host families for The Big Latch On at Regions Field on Friday morning, August 3. As part of World Breastfeeding Week from August 1-7, thousands of breastfeeding people and their babies will gather in their own communities around the world to take part in the Global Big Latch On, a synchronized breastfeeding event in multiple locations.
UAB Women's and Infants Center and Babypalooza have teamed together with over breastfeeding advocates to host the Birmingham event at Regions Field. Registration begins at 10 a.m. with the countdown starting at 10:15 a.m. The latch with moms nursing their babies around the world will take place at 10:30 a.m. The goal is to break the current Global Big Latch On record of 17,992 children breastfeeding at 758 locations across 23 countries.
Free parking is available for the event and golf cart shuttles will be available at the corner of 1st Avenue North and 14th Street South to transport guests to and from Regions Field before and after the event.
Celebrated on August 1-7 every year to raise awareness for the benefits of breastfeeding and the need for global support, the World Alliance for Breastfeeding Action organizes World Breastfeeding Week, which is celebrated in 120 countries and marks the signing of the WHO/UNICEF document Innocenti Declaration, which lists the benefits of breastfeeding, plus global and governmental goals.
Breastfeeding contributes to the normal growth and development of babies/children, and babies/children who are not breastfed are at increased risk of infant morbidity and mortality, adult obesity, diabetes, cardiovascular disease, osteoporosis, and premenopausal breast cancer and ovarian cancer. The World Health Organization recommends breastfeeding exclusively for the first six months of a baby's life to optimize these benefits, continuing to breastfeed for two years and as long thereafter as is mutually desired by a woman and her child.
The Big Latch On endeavors to protect, promote, and support breastfeeding families by raising community-wide awareness of breastfeeding support and knowledge and help positively support breastfeeding in public places.
