Mississippi Braves News Release
PEARL, MS - The Mississippi Braves (21-18, 50-59) split Wednesday's doubleheader with the Birmingham Barons to end the five-game series at Trustmark Park. The M-Braves were defeated 2-1 in game one of the doubleheader but rallied to take game two 1-0. M-Braves first baseman, Tyler Marlette produced the game winning RBI for the M-Braves in game two and Atlanta Braves No. 5 overall prospect, Cristian Pache went 2-for-2 in his Double-A debut with the M-Braves.
After Tuesday night's game was suspended in the bottom of the third inning due to rain, the game was resumed on Wednesday as game one of the doubleheader. The game remained scoreless until the top of the seventh inning when Birmingham plated two runs courtesy of a sacrifice fly from the bat of Jameson Fisher and a fly ball RBI single to center field from Joel Booker.
The M-Braves began a late inning rally in the bottom of the ninth inning but fell short after only manufacturing one run. Brandon Downes produced the lone run of the game for the M-Braves in game one after reaching base safely on an infield single that allowed Travis Demeritte to score.
Birmingham relief pitcher Zach Thompson (2-0, 1.90) earned the win and Mississippi relief pitcher Tyler Pike (0-3, 3.42) suffered the loss. Birmingham's Matt Foster was credited with his second hold of the season and Jose Ruiz picked up his 10th save of the season.
After a brief 30-minute break in between games, the M-Braves hit the reset button to rally for a game two victory. Tyler Marlette's RBI ground ball single to center field in the bottom of the sixth inning that allowed Alejandro Salazar to score proved to be the difference in the game as it was the lone run scored for either team.
Connor Johnstone, Josh Graham and Corbin Clouse combined to provide the M-Braves with solid pitching in game two as they shutout the Barons offense. Graham (3-2, 9.13) earned the win while Birmingham's Bernardo Flores (2-3, 2.29) suffered the loss. Clouse collected his fourth save of the season with the M-Braves.
After earning a 4-1 series victory over the Birmingham Barons, the M-Braves will hit the road and travel to Chattanooga, TN for a five-game series against the Chattanooga Lookouts which will begin on Thursday, August 2nd at 6:15 p.m. (CST)/7:15 p.m. (ET.) Fans can catch all of the road action by tuning in to WYAB 103.9 FM.
