Wichita Thunder News Release
Wichita, KS - Behind a terrific performance from Kevin Regan, Wichita shut down the Missouri Mavericks on Friday Night with a 3-0 win at INTRUST Bank Arena. Regan earned his second professional shutout of his career and first win of the season, stopping all 26 shots he faced. The Thunder also got two more goals from their blue line as Kevin Young and Nathan Lutz scored for Wichita. The two teams will head north to Independence tomorrow night with the game starting at 7:05 p.m.
Wichita got off to a good start, getting a goal from Chad Painchaud less than five minutes into the contest. Ian Lowe caused a turnover in the left corner of the Maverick end and found Painchaud, who found a gap in the defense and put it past Mathieu Corbeil to give the Thunder a 1-0 lead.
With some help from the back-end, Wichita increased its lead to 3-0 in the second period with two goals from defensemen. At 9:05, Matt Summers found Lutz with a cross-ice pass and he blasted a shot past Corbeil. Lutz scored his first goal of the season in his first game since coming off the 14-Day IR. Just 2:36 later, Young made it 3-0 as he joined the play, caught a drop pass from Neil Trimm and roofed it over the shoulder of Corbeil to increase the lead to 3-0.
Both teams had quality scoring chances in the third, but Kevin Regan was able to keep the Mavericks off the score-sheet. Regan's last shutout came in his only appearance after turning pro in 2007-08 with the Providence Bruins of the American Hockey League. He shutout the Manchester Monarchs on April 12, 2008, also by a score of 3-0.
Mathieu Corbeil made 23 saves on 25 shots. Wichita was 0-for-4 on the power play while the Mavericks also were held in check, going 0-for-3. The Thunder defensemen have recorded a combined seven goals, with Young his second of the season. Chad Painchaud extended his point-scoring streak to six games. Neil Trimm added an assist to extend his scoring streak to five games and Ian Lowe extended his streak to four games with an assist.
The Thunder will travel to the Kansas City area tomorrow evening for the second of three-straight games against the Mavericks at 7:05 p.m.. Wichita returns home to host the Mavericks on Sunday afternoon at 5:05 p.m. Sunday is Poster Schedule Night as fans will receive a free poster with admission to the game.
