
Reed Johnson to Rehab with Chiefs This Weekend

PEORIA, IL- The Peoria Chiefs in conjunction with the Chicago Cubs have announced that injured Cubs outfielder Reed Johnson will join his current teammate Aramis Ramirez in a rehab assignment with the Chiefs this weekend. His rehab appearance will begin on Saturday at 5:00 p.m. and finish Sunday at 2:00 p.m. against Beloit at O'Brien Field.
Johnson, who was a contributing factor in the last Cubs win streak, was batting .268 with four home runs and 16 RBI before landing on the disabled list after suffering lower back spasms with his last game coming on June 20. Johnson was acquired by the Cubs on March 25, 2008 as a free agent after he was released by Toronto. He proved himself in a Cubs uniform in his first season when he showed his strengths in the outfield while batting .303 in 109 games. Johnson has a unique tie to the Chiefs this season dating back to 2000. On his way up in the minor league system with the Toronto Blue Jays, Johnson's second manager in his professional career was current Chiefs manager Marty Pevey. In 2000, Johnson and Pevey were both part of Class-A Dunedin and met again in 2002 back in Dunedin. They also worked together in Toronto from 2005-2007 with Johnson in the Blue Jays outfield and Pevey as a first base and third base coach.

The ZOOperstars will be making their second appearance at O'Brien Field on Saturday to entertain the crowd. The ZOOperstars are one of the prominent entertainment acts in professional sports and they performed last season at the Wrigley Field game and have been seen on NBC's "America's Got Talent. After the game, stick around at O'Brien Field and get a prime seat to watch downtown Peoria fireworks. The Chiefs will also welcome their five millionth fan in franchise history and will celebrate with a Grand Prize package worth over $5,000. All fans in attendance will have the chance to be the five millionth fan and win the package which includes Chiefs tickets, prizes from various Chiefs partners, local Peoria businesses and tickets to a Cubs game.
On Sunday kids 12 and under eat free and kids can run the bases after the game while the Chiefs players will sign autographs. It is also Carnival Day at O'Brien Field and gates open at 1:00 p.m.
With Johnson and Ramirez's rehab, this will be the second time this season a Cubs player has rehabbed for the Chiefs in 2009 following Angel Guzman's one inning of work on Tuesday at Kane County. This is the second time in Peoria Chiefs history that two major league players rehabbed at the same time with the last time coming in July 2007 with Kerry Wood and Henry Blanco. The rehab list since the affiliation change in 2005 includes: Nomar Garciaparra, Kerry Wood (2005, 2006 & 2007), Mark Prior, Juan Mateo, Wade Miller, Scott Williamson, Henry Blanco, Scott Eyre and Jon Lieber.
