Northwest Arkansas Naturals News Release
SPRINGDALE, AR - The Naturals were searching for a spark and they got it out of their pitching on Tuesday night. The Naturals' starter LHP Cody Reed was dominant in his outing against Tulsa as the southpaw struck out seven batters in seven scoreless innings to lead Northwest Arkansas (8-16, 48-46) to a 1-0 win over Tulsa (13-12, 43-51) at Arvest Ballpark.
The former second round pick by the Royals in the 2013 draft held the Drillers to just two hits during his seven innings of work while the seven strikeouts marks a new personal Double-A high. Reed (2-2 3.45 ERA) earned his second win of the season for the Naturals and first since he made his debut at Arvest Ballpark on June 28th where he worked six innings of one run ball. On the season, he improves his record to 2-0 against Tulsa with 13.0 total innings of one run ball while recording 12 strikeouts to only six hits and four walks.
The Naturals offense gave the pitching staff all of the run support they'd need in the home half of the second inning. Jorge Bonifacio led off the frame with a double to right field followed by a Bubba Starling single to left. Lane Adams then stepped to the plate and singled to third base to score Bonifacio, all with no one out, to give the Naturals an early 1-0 lead over the Drillers.
Tulsa starter Ross Stripling (1-3, 5.00 ERA) did his best to match Reed by limiting the Naturals offense to one run on eight hits over six innings; however, the damage had been done. Naturals' RHP Kyle Zimmer (S, 3) took over in the eighth inning and held Tulsa to just a single hit while striking out three in two scoreless innings of work in route to earn his third save of the season. The former No. 5 overall pick in the 2012 draft now has a 0.82 ERA to go along with 15 strikeouts in 11.0 innings for Northwest Arkansas on the year.
The Naturals offense collected nine hits on the night and were led by Bubba Starling and Kenny Diekroeger as each collected two hits apiece while Lane Adams drove in the winning RBI with his infield single in the second.
Northwest Arkansas will conclude their 4-game series against the Tulsa Drillers, the Double-A Affiliate of the Los Angeles Dodgers, at Arvest Ballpark tomorrow night at 7:05 p.m. The Naturals will send RHP Christian Binford (3-4, 4.82 ERA) to the mound to face off against RHP Chris Anderson (9-5, 3.34 ERA) of the Drillers on Winning Wednesday presents #NaturalAwesomeness.
