Cotton Leads Tulsa to 6-0 Win over Naturals

SPRINGDALE, AR - The Tulsa Drillers (13-11, 43-50) received a stellar start from RHP Jharel Cotton (4-1 2.39 ERA) as they defeated the Northwest Arkansas Naturals (7-16, 47-46) by the score of 6-0 at Arvest Ballpark on Monday night. The right-hander kept the Naturals at bay the entire night as he fired seven scoreless innings allowing only three hits to go along with 10 strikeouts.
LHP Sean Manaea, the Royals No. 3 prospect by Baseball America coming into the season, made his highly anticipated Double-A debut after being called up from Advanced-A Wilmington on Thursday, July 16. Manaea got the start and went three innings giving up three earned runs on six hits while striking out five on 77 pitches. The 6-foot-5 southpaw had worked 19.2 innings during his time in Wilmington while posting a 3.66 ERA with 22 strikeouts and just four walks before being called up to start for the Naturals.
The Drillers opened up the scoring in the top of the second inning as Adam Law drove in Lars Anderson with a one out double to give the Drillers an early 1-0 lead. Tulsa would add their lead in the top half of the third inning on a single by the aforementioned Anderson that would score Brian Burgamy, who doubled earlier in the inning, to extend the Drillers lead to 2-0.
Tulsa's offense would add two more runs in the top of the fourth on a two run double by Ali Solis to make it a 4-0 game. The Drillers would tack on another run in the top half of the fifth inning and a final run in the top of the eighth inning to set the final score at 6-0.
Northwest Arkansas and the Tulsa Drillers, the Double-A Affiliate of the Los Angeles Dodgers, meet in Game 3 of this 4-game series tomorrow night for a 7:05 p.m. start at Arvest Ballpark. The Naturals will send LHP Cody Reed (1-2, 4.57 ERA) to the hill to square off against RHP Ross Stripling (1-2, 6.00 ERA) of Tulsa on an Arvest Two for Tuesday with Johnsonville Buck-A-Brats.
