RedWolves' Ninth-Inning Push Topples Blowfish

July 31, 2015 - Coastal Plain League (Coastal Plain)
Lexington County Blowfish News Release

Florence, S.C. (July 30, 2015) -- After a late rally to tie the game up at 3, the Florence RedWolves would load the bases in the bottom of the ninth, and walk off on the Lexington County Blowfish for the third time this season by a final score of 4-3 on Thursday night.

Nick Nunziato's fly-ball single into deep left field with everyone playing in defensively brought home Alex Renwick, the game-winning run, and put the RedWolves into the third playoff spot, alone.

Just minutes prior, Tyler Lancaster (Spartanburg Methodist) walked on a 3-1 curveball in the dirt, bringing in the tying run with the bases loaded. A prior epic at-bat by Dalton Duty (University of Central Florida) set the Blowfish up to blow Tyler Keele's save opportunity. Duty fouled off pitch after pitch, teetering on striking out. He saw a head-high changeup with a full count, and walked.

The Blowfish would leave the bases loaded, eventually leading to Florence's celebration.

The Blowfish were forced to work from behind beginning in the second inning. Drew Wharton's attempted sacrifice bunt resulted in an error, scoring Nunziato. One batter later, Nate Wierzgac slammed a double into the right-center field gap and plated two more to extend the RedWolves' lead to 3-0.

The Blowfish would continually chip away at the lead. Derek Olenchuk (Newberry) indirectly scored Lancaster, thanks in part to one of four Florence defensive miscues.

J.D. Crowe (Francis Marion) broke a personal record, and at the perfect time, too. His seventh-inning RBI single into center field scored Jared Williams (University of South Carolina) and trimmed Florence's lead to 3-2. That was his career-best 65th hit, and his 43rd RBI of the season.

Erik Davis (USC-Aiken) accomplished a rare feat on this night. He began the inning striking out Renwick, but a throwing error put him on board. Davis struck out the rest of the side, totaling four strikeouts in one half-inning.

As a result of the loss, the Blowfish hold a 2.5 game lead on the Martinsville Mustangs for the fourth and final playoff spot with five games to go. Up next for the Blowfish is a matchup with the Edenton Steamers on Friday night at 7:05 p.m. Fans will experience postgame fireworks, presented by Charlie Price Paving Company.

The final fireworks show of the season will fall on Saturday, when the Lexington County Blowfish will host the High Point-Thomasville HiToms. Tickets for both games are available by calling the box office at 803-254-FISH, online at blowfishbaseball.com, and at Blowfish on Main (101 East Main Street, Lexington, S.C.).
