Winnipeg Goldeyes News Release
WINNIPEG, MB - The Winnipeg Goldeyes lost 3-2 to the Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks in a spring training game at Newman Outdoor Field on Friday afternoon.
The RedHawks scored three times in the bottom of the ninth inning to overcome a 2-0 Goldeyes' lead and win the game. Randolph Oduber hit a solo home run to left leading off to pull Fargo within 2-1. Keury de la Cruz then walked, and scored the tying run on a double down the right field line from Charlie Valerio. Joe DeLuca followed with a double to right-centre that drove in de la Cruz with the winning run.
The Goldeyes opened the scoring in the top of the fourth. Reggie Abercrombie led off with a single, and the Goldeyes went on to load the bases with no outs on a Jose Sermo walk and a David Begin hit batsmen. Ty Moore plated Abercrombie on a groundball to second base.
In the top of the ninth, Jordan Ebert drew a one-out walk, stole second base, took third on a throwing error, and scored Winnipeg's second run on a wild pitch.
Andrew Woeck picked up the win in relief after allowing an unearned run in the ninth for the RedHawks.
Jack Charleston took the loss in relief for the Goldeyes.
Shane Dawson started for Winnipeg and took a no-decision, throwing three and two-thirds shutout innings in his spring debut. Dawson allowed three hits, walked none, and struck out one.
Trey McNutt started for the RedHawks and also took a no-decision, allowing one earned run on two hits over four innings. McNutt walked two and struck out three.
Zach Hartman, Kenny Mathews, Cody Strayer, and Victor Capellan combined for four and one-third scoreless innings in relief of Dawson.
Josh Mazzola made a terrific defensive play in the bottom of the eighth. With the Goldeyes leading 1-0, Mazzola robbed Patrick O'Donnell with a diving stop on a sharp groundball that ended the inning and stranded runners on second and third.
The Goldeyes continue their pre-season schedule on Saturday when they play the RedHawks at Bucky Burgau Field on the campus of Concordia College in Moorhead, Minnesota. First pitch is scheduled for 1:00 p.m. Saturday's game will not be broadcast.
