Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks News Release
FARGO, N.D. â - The Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks have transferred the contract of right-handed pitcher Kevin Herget to the Cleveland Indians, the club announced Monday.
Herget, who signed with Fargo-Moorhead on Jan. 25, is playing his eighth season of professional baseball and was in his first year with the RedHawks. He was first drafted in the 39th round of the 2013 MLB Amateur Draft by the St. Louis Cardinals out of Kent State University.
The Park Ridge, N.J. native has a lifetime winning percentage of .677 and a 3.29 ERA in his professional career. After not pitching last year, Herget won his first start of the year for the RedHawks on May 19 against the Cleburne Railroaders while only allowing 1 run on 3 hits. Herget has a 1.29 ERA in 7.0 innings pitched for the 'Hawks this season.
Herget spent all of his seven affiliated seasons within the Cardinals organization, and also played two seasons of winter league ball, one each in the Venezuelan and Dominican winter leagues. In his debut season in 2013, Herget became the first pitcher for the State College Spikes (St. Louis, A-) to start the season with seven straight winning decisions, tying for the New York-Penn League lead in wins that year.
In his eight seasons of professional baseball, Herget is a combined 42-20 over 231 appearances (43 starts). He has struck out 499 batters, walked 131, and given up 189 earned runs on 516.2 innings pitched.
Herget played collegiate baseball for Division III Kean University (Union, N.J.) from 2010 to 2013 and helped lead the Cougars to three-straight Division III World Series appearances from 2011-13 - and within one win of another appearance in 2010. In his four years at Kean, he compiled a 31-9 record with three saves in 58 appearances. In 43 starts, he tallied 12 complete games, five shutouts, and a tidy 2.49 ERA - including a personal best 1.62 ERA in his senior campaign for the Cougars. He finished his collegiate career as Kean's all-time leader in pitching victories, innings pitched (347.2) and strikeouts (356).
Herget is the 4th RedHawks player acquired by an MLB organization this year and the second this month (RHP Frank Duncan was acquired by the Colorado Rockies on May 5). He is the 84th player in Fargo-Moorhead franchise history to be acquired, with three of those players going on to play in the Majors.
The RedHawks kick off their 2021 home slate with the Home Opener on Tuesday, May 25 at 7:02 p.m. against the Chicago Dogs at Newman Outdoor Field. This year also marks the team's 25th Anniversary, with various celebrations to be held throughout the year.
