Oklahoma City Comets News Release
TONIGHT:
The RedHawks conclude a homestand with the rubber game of a rain-shortened, 3-game series with the Albuquerque Isotopes. After yesterday's 9-3 loss, OKC has dropped 4 of its last 5 and is 2-4 on the homestand. The RedHawks are tied for third in the American South Division with New Orleans, a half-game back of the leading tandem of Round Rock and Albuquerque. Righthander Tommy Hunter makes his 2009 RedHawks debut after starting the season at Frisco. Lefty Eric Milton gets the call for the Isotopes.
WEDNESDAY'S RECAP:
Albuquerque broke open yesterday's game with a 5-run fourth inning en route to a 9-3 win to level the series at 1-1. Charlie Haeger (3-2) snapped Albuquerque's 4-game skid with his second straight win, while Michael Ballard (1-2) took the loss in a 5-inning start. Ballard allowed a season-high 3 homers, including a 3-run shot to Mitch Jones, which was back-to-back with a Jason Repko homer in the fourth. OKC grabbed a 2-0 lead in the third on a 2-run single by Esteban German, only to have the Isotopes respond with their big inning in the next half.
BOGGS LENGTHENS STREAK:
RedHawks outfielder Brandon Boggs extended his hitting streka to 7 games with a 1-for-2 afternoon yesterday. Boggs' streak is the longest by a RedHawk this season. During the streak, Boggs is 9-for-25 (.360) with 3 RBIs. Boggs has reached base in 21 of 22 games and tops the team with 20 walks, tied for second in the league with Reno's Josh Whitesell. Omaha's Kila Ka'aihue leads the PCL with 26 walks.
MOVES:
Texas transferred outfielder Ben Harrison to Double-A Frisco today and signed Nate Gold as a free agent. Gold was a RedHawk the previous 2 seasons. Texas optioned pitcher Luis Mendoza to OKC prior to its game in Oakland last night and transferred reliever Pedro Strop to Double-A Frisco.
STILL SETTLING IN:
The RedHawks and Albuquerque played a 3-hour, 10-minute game yesterday, continuing a trend of long games, especially at AT&T Bricktown Ballpark. OKC's average game time in 2009 is 2 hours, 56 minutes. Home games have been particularly long, as the four longest games have been at The Brick: 3:55 on April 22 (11 innings), 3:53 on April 30 (10 innings), 3:47 on May 3 (10 innings) and 3:41 on April 21 (9 innings). The average home time is 3:04.
DOT...DOT...DOT:
OKC has gone 10 games without hitting a home run. The RedHawks' last homer was a 3-run shot by German Duran on April 23 against Omaha at The Brick...OKC's 10 homers are the fewest in the league...RedHawks pitching had allowed just 6 home runs prior to this homestand, but has given up 9 in the 6 games on the current stand. The RedHawks have allowed the second-fewest homers in the league behind Memphis' 9.
DODGERS RETURN TO THE DUKE CITY:
Like previous opponent New Orleans, Albuquerque changed parent clubs in the off season, switching from Florida to the Los Angeles Dodgers. Albuquerque has a long history with the Dodgers, most recently when the Albuquerque Dukes, who moved to Portland in 2001, were the Dodgers' PCL affiliate from 1972-2000.
RANGERS NAME PLAYERS OF THE MONTH:
The Texas Rangers have anounced their Minor League Players of the Month for April. Class A Hickory righthander Wilfredo Boscan is the Pitcher of the Month. Boscan, 19, went 2-1 with a 0.51 ERA and .100 opponents' batting average in April. Double-A Frisco catcher Manny Pina, 21, batted .481 in April and still leads all the minor leagues with a .469 average entering today's action. Hockey outfielder David Paisano was named defender of the Month for April.
