Portland Beavers News Release

PORTLAND, Ore. - Brandon Hynick tossed a five-hit shutout in the first game of a doubleheader and Christian Colonel's pinch-hit, three-run homer gave the Colorado Springs Sky Sox a 4-3 victory over the Portland Beavers in the nightcap Wednesday night at PGE Park.

Hynick led the Sky Sox (16-9) to a 3-0 win in the first game, turning in a complete-game effort and hitting his first career home run.

RBI doubles by Emil Brown and Kyle Blanks highlighted a three-run, third-inning outburst for the Beavers (13-14) in the second game; Portland took a 3-1 lead into the sixth before Colonel narrowly cleared the left field wall with his two-out blast off reliever Joe Thatcher (1-1).

But not even Colonel's exploits could overshadow the considerable first-game efforts of Hynick (2-2), who struck out two and issued one walk in his seven innings of work to record the fourth complete game of his four-year career.

Hynick, who was 3-for-25 (.120) in his career entering the game, was 2-for-3 at the plate and belted a solo home run onto the 18th Street boardwalk in the fifth inning of the opener.

Kevin Howard 3-for-3 with a double and Will Venable added two hits and a double to account for Portland's hits in the first contest.

Despite suffering a hard-luck loss in the first game, Eulogio De La Cruz (0-1), who was making his debut with the Beavers, limited the Sky Sox to one run, four hits and one walk across four innings.

Damian Moss picked up the victory for Colorado Springs in game two, while Steven Register recorded his fourth save.

The Beavers and Sky Sox will conclude their series Thursday night at PGE Park. First pitch is 7:05 p.m.

NOTES: Venable made what appeared to be a home run-saving catch at the top of the wall to rob Matt Miller in the third inning of the nightcap ... Hynick's home run was the first by a Sky Sox pitcher since Aug. 22, 2005, by Christian Parker ... the Beavers have been swept in both of their doubleheaders this season ... it marked the first time Portland was swept in a home doubleheader since June 7, 2004, vs. Tucson ... Portland starter Josh Banks held the Sky Sox to one unearned run and five hits in the second game.
