RedHawks Game Notes

September 6, 2010 - Pacific Coast League (PCL1)
Oklahoma City Baseball Club News Release

Oklahoma City RedHawks (73-69) vs. Omaha Royals (80-63)

Game 143 | Sept. 6, 2010, 1:05 pm CDT | AT&T Bricktown Ballpark | Oklahoma City, OK

1340 Fox Sports, RedHawks Radio Network | Play-by-Play: Jim Byers & Judson Richards

TBA (Bullpen) vs. RH Matt Herges (8-4, 4.86)

TODAY: The RedHawks wrap up the regular season with a Labor Day matchup with the Omaha Royals at 1:05 pm CDT. OKC is heading to the PCL playoffs, with the first round starting Wednesday (see details below). Omaha won yesterday's game 9-1, breaking it open with a 5-run ninth. The Royals lead the series 2-1 while the RedHawks own a 9-6 edge in the season series. The RedHawks' starter was not set at press time. OKC used a collection of relievers yesterday as they catch up from back-to-back doubleheaders on Wednesday and Thursday, plus the withholding (for a possible big league need) of yesterday's scheduled starter Scott Feldman.

SEASON NOT OVER: While today marks the end of the regular season, the RedHawks have qualified for the best-of-five American Conference Championship Series by winning the conference's South Division. It's OKC's second division crown in 3 years and their fifth (2002, 2004-05, 2008) under Bobby Jones.

UP NEXT: The RedHawks will travel to either Iowa or Memphis for the first two games of the playoffs, which start on Wednesday. Iowa and Memphis are playing a winner-gets-in season finale today at Principal Park in Des Moines. Iowa leads Memphis by 1 game, so the Cubs win outright with a victory today. But if the Redbirds win and the teams tie in the standings, Memphis advances on the second tiebreaker (record within the division). The first tiebreaker, wins in head-to-head games, would be an 8-8 deadlock if Memphis wins today.

FIRST ROUND SCHEDULE:

Sept. 8 @ Iowa/Memphis

Sept. 9 @ Iowa/Memphis

Sept. 10 vs. Iowa/Mem, at OKC 7:05

Sept. 11 vs. Iowa/Mem, at OKC 7:05, if necessary

Sept. 12 vs. Iowa/Mem, at OKC 1:05, if necessary

START TIMES: If the first-round opponent is Iowa, the Wednesday-Thursday games will start at 6:35 pm CDT. If Memphis advances, the first 2 games would start at 7:05 pm CDT.

OUT WEST: Tacoma clinched its division with a 9-0 win at Fresno last night, so the Rainiers will take on Sacramento in the Pacific Conference Championship series starting on Wednesday in Sacramento. After the first 2 games at Raley Field, Games 3, 4, and 5 (if necessary) of the first round will played at Seattle's Safeco Field, home of Tacoma's parent Seattle Mariners, because a $30 million renovation of Cheney Stadium has already begun, rendering the stadium unusable.

PRIOR RETURNS TO AFFILIATED BASEBALL: Former Chicago Cub righthander Mark Prior, signed by the Texas Rangers as a free agent on Friday, pitched 1 inning in relief yesterday, his first appearance in affiliated baseball since Aug. 10, 2006 for the Cubs at Milwaukee. Prior threw 28 pitches (16 strikes) in a scoreless inning in relief of yesterday's spot starter, Tanner Scheppers. After retiring the first 2 batters, Prior allowed an infield single, another single and a walk before fanning Jarrod Dyson to strand the bases loaded in the fourth inning. Prior, the second overall pick of the Chicago Cubs in the 2001 draft, had not pitched in affiliated baseball since 2006 because of a pair of shoulder surgeries.

PITCHING NOTES: Lefty Ben Snyder worked 4.2 relief innings yesterday, the longest OKC relief outing of the year and his second appearance in Triple-A...Snyder did not figure in the decision...Dillsburg, Pa., was well-represented by pitchers in yesterday's game, as both Omaha starter Anthony Lerew and OKC reliever Cody Eppley call the roughly 2000-population town in south-central Pennsylvania home...the RedHawks have not scored a run against Omaha's bullpen in a combined 7.2 innings in this series.
