LH Michael Kirkman (1-0, 4.50) vs. RH Marco Estrada (0-0, 0.00)
TONIGHT: The Oklahoma City RedHawks open a 4-game series at Greer Stadium against the Nashville Sounds (Milwaukee Brewers). OKC had its 6-game winning streak stopped last night by allowing 3 runs in the bottom of the eighth to lose 4-3 at Memphis. The RedHawks and Sounds share the league's best record at 8-4, along with the Las Vegas 51s. OKC leads the American South Division by 1 game over New Orleans. Nashville is atop the American North by 2 games over Iowa. Lefty Michael Kirkman makes his third start of the year for the RedHawks, to be opposed by Nashville righthander Marco Estrada. Neither has faced tonight's opponent in any previous career starts.
FIRST TIME FOR EVERYTHING: Oklahoma City was officially out-hit for the first time all season in last night's 4-3 loss in Memphis. The Redbirds were credited with 6 hits to OKC's 4, a season low. The RedHawks had either out-hit the opposition or had even hit totals in the previous 11 games. The RedHawks are 6-2 when collecting more hits, 0-1 when out-hit and 2-1 when the hits are even. Chad Tracy and Mitch Moreland doubled last night, while Gregorio Petit and Matt Brown had singles. The RedHawks drew 5 walks and had one hit-by-pitch. Moreland drove in all 3 runs as the RedHawks' 6-game winning streak ended and Memphis notched its first home win of the campaign.
MCCARTHY LOGS THE INNINGS: Last night's starter, Brandon McCarthy, matched Derek Holland for the season's longest start at 7.2 innings in a no decision, allowing 3 runs on 4 hits. McCarthy has gone at least 7 innings in all 3 starts, allowing just 11 hits in 21.2 innings. McCarthy and Holland are 1-2 in the PCL in innings pitched with 21.2 and 19.2, respectively.
HOLLAND TAKES HOME PITCHER OF WEEK: OKC lefty Derek Holland has been named the PCL's first Pitcher of the Week. Holland has won his last 2 starts with scoreless performances, most recently Sunday. Holland has not allowed a run in 14.2 consecutive innings dating to a solo homer by Albuquerque's Michael Restovich on April, 8, which remains Holland's only run allowed in 19.2 innings this season. Holland's a 0.46 ERA is fifth in the league. OKC had the distinction of having the first Pitcher of the Week in 2009, when Luis Mendoza took home the honor.
TEAM RANKINGS: OKC's 2.81 team ERA is third in the league behind Colorado Springs (2.75) and Nashville (2.78). The RedHawks have the league's best WHIP (walks plus hits vs. innings pitched) at 1.10. The RedHawks share the league lead with 2 shutouts. Offensively, the RedHawks led the PCL in on-base percentage (.371) and are second in team batting (.288) and slugging (.462).
TRACKING TRACY: Chad Tracy enters play today tied for fourth in the league with 4 home runs and 12 RBIs. Tracy's .694 slugging percentage is fifth in the PCL.
SMOAK RISING: Justin Smoak brings a 10-game on-base streak into today's contest. Smoak leads the PCL with 14 walks and is fourth in on-base percentage at .509.
DOT...DOT...DOT: OKC has hit into 18 double plays while turning 7 in the field...Gregorio Petit has played every inning at short, the only RedHawk to man one position for the entire season.
SALTALAMACCHIA REHABS: Texas Rangers catcher Jarrod Saltalamacchia has joined the RedHawks for a major league rehab assignment. After being Texas' opening-day catcher April 5 and turning in a pinch hit at-bat April 7, he went on the 15-day DL April 8 with a left upper back strain. Last season, Saltalamacchia experienced shoulder problems in early August and started only four games after Aug. 4, eventually undergoing surgery for Thoracic Outlet Syndrome Sept. 21. More information on him can be found on page 5 of today's notes.
