Express Slip Past Omaha 1-0 in 10 Innings

ROUND ROCK, Texas - Matt Kata's bases-loaded sacrifice fly in the bottom of the 10th inning snapped a scoreless tie and gave the Round Rock Express a 1-0 victory over the Omaha Royals in Tuesday night's series opener at The Dell Diamond. It was the second consecutive extra-inning game for the Express (4-9), while the Royals (5-8) dropped their third one-run game of the season.

Drew Locke and Collin Delome began the bottom of the 10th with back-to-back singles. After Kevin Cash lined out to right, pinch-hitter Drew Meyer drew a walk to load the bases. Kata, batting in the leadoff spot of the order, connected on the walk-off sacrifice winner.

The fourth pitcher of the night for Round Rock, Gary Majewski (1-0), was the winner as he pitched a scoreless frame in the top of the 10th. Express starter Any Van Hekken threw 7.0 scoreless innings on three hits and a walk, striking out a season-high eight batters. Yorman Bazardo and Casey Daigle relieved Van Hekken for an inning each, combing to only allow one hit.

Carlos Rosa (1-1) took the loss, allowing the lone run on three hits in 1.2 innings. Starter Bruce Chen worked 8.0 innings, giving up five hits with eight strikeouts and one intentional walk.

Chris Shelton had Round Rock's only multiple-hit game, going 3-for-3 with a walk. He has hit safely in each of his 11 starts this season and in 13 consecutive starts, dating back to last season.

Irving Falu was 2-for-5 for the Royals. Omaha stranded nine runners and was 0-for-6 with runners in scoring position, while Round Rock stranded seven and was 0-for-5 with runners in scoring position.

Round Rock and Omaha continue their four-game series Wednesday with a 6:05 p.m. CDT first pitch at The Dell Diamond. Left-hander Polin Trinidad (0-0, 2.00) is scheduled to start for the Express, while the Royals counter with right-hander Brad Thompson (0-1, 6.52).
