Tonight's Game-- The RedHawks look for a fourth straight win as they face the Nashville Sounds for the first time in 2012. After struggling throughout 2011, the RedHawks are two games above .500 for the first time since the end of the 2010 season. Nashville had a rough opening weekend, losing three of four in New Orleans, while scoring just six runs with a .172 team average.
Yesterday-- In a battle of 21-year-old aces, Jordan Lyles out-dueled Cardinals top prospect Shelby Miller and led the RedHawks (3-1) in an 8-1 win over the Memphis Redbirds (1-3). Lyles (1-0) allowed one earned run and seven hits with one walk and five strikeouts in six innings for the winning decision. The RedHawks scored three times in the second and extended the lead to 4-0 in the third when Brett Wallace connected on his first homer of the season. Leading 4-1 in the eighth, the RedHawks put the game away with four more runs. Wallace finished 3-for-4 with three RBIs and three runs.
Tonight's Probable Pitchers-- Henry Sosa make his 2012 debut after spending time with five teams across three levels in two organizations in 2011...Sosa was traded from San Francisco to Houston on July 19, 2011 as part of a deal for Jeff Keppinger...He made one start with the RedHawks last season, tossing seven scoreless innnings in a no decision at Las Vegas on August 5...Five days later he was called up to the Astros, and in 10 starts with Houston, went 3-5 with a 5.23 ERA...Seth McClung also makes his first start of the season for Nashville...McClung rejoins the Brewers ogranization for another stint, after playing with Milwaukee from 2007-2009...In 177 Major League appearances (51 GS), McClung is 26-34 with a 5.46 ERA...He was originally drafted by Tampa Bay in the 5th Round in 1999...McClung spent 2011 playing with Round Rock in the PCL (2-3, 5.19 ERA)
Our Hits Are Better Than Yours-- Over this weekend's series against Memphis, the RedHawks and Redbirds nearly had the same amount of hits (OKC-40, MEM-39). The biggest difference was that the RedHawks had 14 extra-base hits, while the Redbirds had just nine. Also, the RedHawks hit .333 with runners in scoring position (16x48), and Memphis hit just .154 in the same situation (4x26). Combine those two factors and that's how the RedHawks outscored the Redbirds 28-12 despite virtually the same amount of hits.
Now That's Quality-- The RedHawks got great starting pitching over the four-game series against Memphis. The four starters combined to go 3-1 with a 2.35 ERA (6 ER/23.0 IP) and a 21:3 strikeout to walk ratio. Three of the four starters turned in a quality start, and the one non-quality start still garnered a win by Aneury Rodriguez, who allowed three runs in five innings in Friday's 12-3 victory. The lone loss was charged to Paul Clemens, who allowed just a pair of solo home runs over six effective innings.
Trading Up-- Nine members of the RedHawks current roster came to the Houston system via trade. Pitchers Juan Abreu and Paul Clemens came from Atlanta in exchange for Michael Bourn last season. Infielder Jimmy Paredes was a Yankees farmhand until he was sent to the Astros in exchange for Lance Berkman in 2010. Pitchers Jonnathan Aristil (COL), Enerio Del Rosario (CIN), Henry Sosa (SF), Mickey Storey (OAK), and infielders Angel Sanchez (BOS) and Brett Wallace (TOR) also came to be Astros via trade.
Lots of Familiar Faces...Lots of New Faces-- Of the 25 active players on the current roster, 14 spent time with the RedHawks in 2011. Although 10 pitchers return for another stint, only four position players donned a RedHawks uniform last season. Of the 11 players who are new to the RedHawks, eight are new to the Astros organization entirely.
Against the Sounds-- The RedHawks went 9-7 against the Sounds in 2011, despite being outhit and outscored by Nashville...The RedHawks pitching staff fanned 138 batters in 138 innings...Collin DeLome was one of the team's offensive leaders, hitting .448 (13x29) with two homers, six RBI, and a .538 on-base percentage in 12 games. The RedHawks were 6-2 against the Sounds in Bricktown, including a series sweep May 2-5. These two teams will meet 16 times in 2012, with the Sounds' next trip to OKC coming May 29-June 1.
Welcome to Chickasaw Bricktown Ballpark-- Officials with the Oklahoma City RedHawks and the Chickasaw Nation announced Thursday, April 5 they had decided to rename the stadium Chickasaw Bricktown Ballpark. The RedHawks and the Chickasaw Nation believe the new name meets the objectives of the partnership and is respectful to the wishes of Oklahoma City citizens and passionate RedHawks fans. It also underscores both parties' mutual commitment to be responsive to the community. The agreement still includes branding elements for Newcastle Casino, Chickasaw Country and the Chickasaw Nation, consumer promotions, hospitality at stadium events and opportunities to use the ballpark for Chickasaw Nation and Newcastle Casino programs.
RedHawks Radio-- For the second consecutive season, the Oklahoma City RedHawks and Clear Channel Radio of Oklahoma City will broadcast all 144 RedHawks games on AM 1340 The Game...Each game will be carried live and all broadcasts will start 30 minutes before the first pitch with "RedHawks On-Deck"... Shadrick returns for his second season and will be joined in the booth this year by Alex Freedman.
