Aces Drop Opener to Salt Lake, 8-2
April 9, 2012 - Pacific Coast League (PCL1)
Reno Aces News Release
RENO, Nev.-Ryan Wheeler and Konrad Schmidt hit back-to-back homers for the Aces in the seventh, but an early deficit was too much to overcome Monday night, as the Salt Lake Bees earned an 8-2 victory over Reno in the series opener at Aces Ballpark.
The Bees jumped on top early and never looked back. Salt Lake scored three in the first, added single runs in the third and fifth innings, then posted three more in the sixth to take an 8-0 advantage. Wheeler and Schmidt would finally get the Aces on the board with solo home runs off David Pauley, but the Aces would get no closer.
Salt Lake starter Trevor Bell (1-0) earned the win after tossing 5.2 scoreless frames. Bell walked three and struck out four.
Aces starter Tom Layne (0-1) was pinned with the loss, surrendering four runs-three earned-on five hits over 3.2 innings of work. Layne punched-out four and didn't issue a free pass. Out of the Reno bullpen, Daniel Stange allowed four runs-three earned-in 1.1 innings, Jason Lane worked three scoreless frames, and Jonathan Albaladejo worked a perfect ninth.
At the dish for the Aces, A.J. Pollock maintained his torrid start with two more hits. Randy Ruiz added a pair of singles, and Taylor Harbin doubled. Wheeler's home run was the first of his Triple-A career.
The Aces and Bess hit the second leg of this four-game set on Tuesday night at Aces Ballpark. RHP Barry Enright (1-0, 3.18 ERA) gets the nod for Reno, while Salt Lake will counter with RHP Garrett Richards (1-0, 2.57 ERA). First pitch is set for 6:35 p.m. PT.
The game will be a 2-for-$22 Tuesday, with two tickets, two hot dogs and two sodas available for just $22. Tickets are on-sale now at RenoAces.com, by calling (775) 334-7000 or by visiting the Aces Ballpark Ticket Office.
