
Redbirds beat Zephyrs 9-1

On a night when the University of Memphis was playing for a national championship in basketball, the city's baseball team put together a late offensive outburst to down the New Orleans Zephyrs.
The Memphis Redbirds scored six times in the top of the ninth, including a three-run double by Brian Barden and a two-run homer by Joe Mather, to take the opener of the four-game series, 9-1.
New Orleans starter Brian Stokes (0-1) struck out seven, but threw 78 pitches over four innings while allowing two runs on four hits with two walks to take the loss.
Redbirds' right-hander Mitchell Boggs (1-0) got the win after going six innings and yielding only one unearned run and three hits.
The Zephyrs' lone run came in the first, when Anderson Hernandez led off with a single and advanced to third with two outs. Caleb Stewart hit a grounder to third, but Barden threw wildly to first to allow the run to score.
The second game of the series is Tuesday night at 7:00
