IRONPIGS SWEEP A PAIR FROM WINGS WITH A PAIR OF 6-RUN 4TH INNINGS-
The Red Wings played their fourth doubleheader of the season on Saturday night, as Lehigh Valley swept a pair from Rochester at Coca-Cola Park. In game one, IronPigs outfielder Jason Ellison capped a six-run fourth inning with a two-run home run, as Lehigh Valley defeated Rochester 7-5. In game two, IronPigs designated hitter David Newhan and outfielder Michael Taylor each hit home runs in a six-run fourth inning, as Lehigh Valley defeated Rochester 6-3 to complete the doubleheader sweep. Red Wings starter Philip Humber (4-7) took the loss in game one while Wings starter Jason Jones (2-10) took the loss in game two. David Winfree had two hits in game one while Danny Valencia had two hits in game two as Rochester managed just 13 hits in the two games.
*WHAT'S ON DECK*
HIT THE ROAD JACK-The Red Wings conclude a four-game road trip tonight with the final game of a four-game series at Lehigh Valley. Rochester will play in Lehigh Valley tonight before returning to Frontier Field on Monday for a four-game series vs. Pawtucket Monday- Thursday.
ROAD WARRIORS-The Red Wings are in the midst of playing 12 of their first 16 games after the All-Star break away from Frontier Field. During this 16-game stretch Rochester will play a four-game series in Lehigh Valley, Charlotte, and Gwinnett. So far Rochester has a 0-3 record during this 16-game stretch.
*WHAT'S NEWS*
DOUBLE DIPPING-The Red Wings played their fourth doubleheader of the 2009 season Saturday night. With Saturday's sweep by Lehigh Valley the Red Wings have been swept three doubleheaders in a row and five times in their last seven doubleheaders (does not include the Day/Night doubleheader Rochester played on July 5). Rochester holds an impressive 19-10-25 record in doubleheaders (63-45 record) since Rochester changed affiliations to the Minnesota Twins in 2003.
CHICKS DIG THE LONG BALL-Third baseman Danny Valencia and outfielder David Winfree have each hit a home run in back-to-back games. If Valencia or Winfree can hit a home run tonight they would be the first Red Wing players to hit a home run in three consecutive games this season. Last season four different Red Wings hit a home run in three straight games (Denard Span, Darnell McDonald, Jason Pridie and Randy Ruiz). The last Red Wings player to hit a home run in four consecutive games was Sam Horn June 23-25, 1990 when Horn hit six home runs during a four-game stretch.
HOT WING-Third baseman Danny Valencia has a nine-game hitting streak batting .457 (16-for-35) with three doubles, three home runs, eight RBI, and eight runs scored. Valencia has five multi-hit games in this nine-game stretch and is hitting .407 (22-for-54) with three home runs and 12 RBI in the month of July.
YOU GOTTA TAKE CARE OF BUSINESS IN THE NORTH-Rochester holds a 21-22 record against North Division opponents so far this season. Rochester has 193-169 (.533) record vs. division rivals since 2005(43-37 in 2005, 41-38 in 2006, 45-35 in 2007 and 43-37 in 2008). Prior to 2005 the Red wings hadn't had a winning divisional record since the IL went to three divisions in 1998.
BAD STARTS-The Red Wings starting pitching has struggled the first three games of this four-game series, going 0-3 with a 9.95 ERA. In 12.2 innings of work, the starters have allowed 17 runs (14 earned) on 19 hits while walking eight and striking out nine.
THESE HOTELS AREN'T SO BAD-So far this season the Red Wings have a 21-23 record away from Frontier Field. If Rochester can finish with a winning road record this season it would only be the second time since 1994 that Rochester has had a winning road record. The last two times Rochester has finished a season with a winning road record they've made the Governors' Cup Finals (1993 37-34 record away from Silver Stadium and 2006 37-35 record away from Frontier Field).
