Indians Break Up No Hitter And Score Two In Ninth But Fall Short

PAWTUCKET, R.I. -- Indianapolis Indians' designated hitter Larry Broadway broke up a no-hitter with a two-out single in the ninth and was followed by third basemen Tagg Bozied's two-run homer, but the Tribe's comeback fell short as the Pawtucket Red Sox avoided the series sweep with a 3-2 victory Sunday afternoon at McCoy Stadium.

With the loss the Indians drop to 44-50 on the season and 23-27 on the road, while the Red Sox improve to 44-47 overall and 22-24 at home with the loss. With the victory Pawtucket ends an eight game losing streak, while Indianapolis still takes the season series 5-3 with no more meetings between the two teams to take place in the rest of the regular season.

After ripping 14 hits in last night's contest and tallying at least nine base knocks in each of the first three games of the series, the Indianapolis offense was held hitless for the first 8.2 innings on Sunday afternoon. PawSox starting pitcher Michael Bowden (5.0 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 4 BB, 5 SO) walked four and struck out five in five hitless innings of work before relievers T.J. Large (1.0 IP, 1 BB) and Javier Lopez (2.1 IP 2 SO) came in to allow only one walk in their combined 3.1 frames.

Lopez was then pulled from the contest with one out in the ninth for another Red Sox reliever, Fernando Cabrera (0.2, 2 H, 2 R, 2 ER), who then recorded an out against the first batter he faced. Only one out away from a Pawtucket no-hitter Cabrera then gave up the first Indians base knock when Broadway lined a single up the middle to finally give the Tribe a hit in the contest.

Broadway then came plateward as Bozied launched the first pitch he saw from Cabrera over the left field wall for his second long ball of the season. However, Cabrera recovered from the home run and recorded the final out of the contest when he got Indianapolis C Robinzon Diaz to ground out in the very next at-bat.

Initially Pawtucket was not having much success at the plate either as they were held scoreless for the first five innings in Sunday's contest by Tribe starter Eric Hacker (7.0 IP, 6 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 6 SO, 1 HBP). The Red Sox did break through a little earlier than the Tribe as Pawtucket went on to tally the first score with a run in the sixth.

DH Paul McAnulty collected the first run of the contest when he was brought home on an RBI ground out by 1B Aaron Bates. McAnulty doubled with one-out and was moved to third on a single by RF Chris Carter before he broke the 0-0 deadlock with his run in the sixth.

The PawSox later added what would prove to be much needed insurance as they were able to score two more runs in the bottom of the eighth. At the time the two runs were only insurance but the rally in the eighth proved to be the difference for Pawtucket to avoid the series sweep.

2B Ivan Ochoa led off the frame and was plunked by Tribe reliever Jason Davis (1.0 IP, 2 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 1 HBP) and was then followed by McAnulty (2-for-4, 2 R, 1 2B) who slapped a single to right field for the game's only multi-hit performance. Both runners would eventually come around to score as they moved to third and second on a Tribe throwing error before they were brought plateward by Pawtucket C Mark Wagner.

Wagner provided what turned out to be the game-winning hit when he drove in two runs on a single to right field to give the Red Sox the 3-0 lead. The Indians then posted their own two-run inning in the ninth, but it was too little too late as Pawtucket managed to avoid the Tribe's attempt at their first series sweep of the year.

Large went on to record his first win of the season with his scoreless sixth inning and Lopez picked up his third hold of the year with his 2.1 perfect frames out of the bullpen. Bowden received a no decision in his first career outing against the Tribe, while his counterpart, Hacker, received the loss to drop to 2-4 on the season though he allowed no walks and just one run on six hits, while also striking out six in six innings of work.

Indianapolis will now begin an eight-game homestand in which they will face the Durham Bulls (Triple-A affiliate of the Tampa Bay Rays) and the Buffalo Bisons (Triple-A affiliate of the New York Mets) at Victory Field.

The Tribe will open up the homestand with a four-game series against Durham that begins on Monday at 7:00 p.m. RHP Daniel McCutchen is scheduled to start for the Indians, while LHP Carlos Hernandez is expected to get the nod for the Bulls.

The contest will be carried by WXLW-950 AM and www.IndyIndians.com with Howard Kellman and Scott McCauley. The pre-game show begins at 6:45 p.m.
