Grand Rapids Griffins News Release
GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - The Detroit Red Wings on Thursday assigned forward Joakim Andersson to the Grand Rapids Griffins, while the Griffins signed defenseman Joel Chouinard to a professional tryout.
Andersson has appeared in 28 games with the Red Wings this season, tallying three points (1-2-3), six penalty minutes and a plus-one rating.
Detroit's second choice (88th overall) in the 2007 NHL Entry Draft, Andersson will be playing in his fifth season as a Griffin. He was assigned by Detroit on Jan. 24 but did not appear in any games with Grand Rapids and was recalled on Jan. 26.
Between 2008-13, the Munkedal, Sweden, native registered 101 points (38-63-101) and 121 PIM in 189 regular season games for the Griffins. Andersson was a member of the Griffins' 2013 Calder Cup Championship team, accumulating eight points (3-5-8) in 10 playoff games.
The 6-foot-1, 211-pound forward has played in 204 career NHL games, all with the Red Wings, and has amassed 36 points (15-21-36) and 48 PIM. Andersson has played in each of the last three Stanley Cup Playoffs with Detroit (2013-15), tallying seven points (2-5-7) in 22 games.
In 38 games for the ECHL's Toledo Walleye, Chouinard is the highest scoring defenseman on the team, accumulating 25 points (6-19-25) while also tallying 30 PIM. Chouinard's lone AHL appearance this season came with Chicago during the Wolves' 4-3 overtime win at Grand Rapids on Jan. 17.
A native of Sherbrooke, Quebec, Chouinard will be playing in his second season as a Griffin. He appeared in two games for Grand Rapids during the 2014-15 campaign but did not record a point. Since turning pro during the 2010-11 season, the 6-foot-1, 187-pound blueliner has registered 15 goals and 31 assists (15-31-46) in 195 AHL games between the Lake Erie Monsters (2010-13), Hamilton Bulldogs (2013-14), Griffins (2014-15) and Chicago Wolves (2015-16).
The Griffins travel to the Iowa Wild on Friday to begin a three-game road trip.
