Red Stars Sweep Doubleheader

EVANSTON, Ill. -- Chicago Red Stars forward Cristiane netted a goal and four assists Wednesday night as Chicago swept a doubleheader against Northwestern and DePaul at Northwestern University's Lakeside Field. The Red Stars topped the Wildcats, 2-0, in the opener, and then blanked the Blue Demons, 4-0, in Game 2.

The night consisted of three 45-minute matches, capped off by Northwestern and DePaul playing to a scoreless draw.

Against Northwestern in the opener, Red Stars forward Ella Masar netted two goals as the University of Illinois alumna defeated her former Big Ten Conference foe Northwestern. Masar opened the scoring when Cristiane dished the ball from the left flank and found Masar on the right side for a close-range goal in the 20th minute for the 1-0 lead. Then in the 28th minute, the same duo came through again when Cristiane played the ball through the middle and fed to Masar. Masar was one-on-one against Northwestern goalkeeper Carolyn Edwards and struck the ball toward the right side for a 2-0 advantage.

Against DePaul, Red Stars midfielder and former DePaul Blue Demon Julianne Sitch netted the game's first goal in the 11th minute. Cristiane assisted Sitch's shot, which deflected off of a DePaul defender.

Cristiane notched her fourth assist of the night in the 15th minute. Masar started the Red Stars' attack when she made a back heel pass to Cristiane, who then spotted Michele Weissenhofer as she gave Chicago a 2-0 lead.

Brittany Klein pushed the Red Stars' lead to 3-0 in the 38th minute when she found some space in the middle of the pitch and drilled a shot inside the left post past Edwards. Chicago capped off the scoring in the 43rd minute with a Cristiane goal, assisted by Jessica McDonald, for the 4-0 final.

The Red Stars improved to 4-1 on the preseason. They wrap up their preseason schedule when they travel to Urbana, Ill., to take on the University of Illinois at 1 p.m. Saturday, April 3.
