Red Sox Shut out the Woodies in Opener

SALEM, VA - Darwinzon Hernandez and Daniel Gonzalez led Salem (26-27, 58-63) on the mound in a 5-0 victory over the Wood Ducks (17-37, 52-72) on Friday night. The two combined for 14 strikeouts and only three hits to the Wood Duck offense.

Steven Bruce took the loss despite his seventh quality start of the season. He worked into the sixth and struck out six, while only allowing two earned runs on the night. The Red Sox got on the board in the second thanks to an unearned run with two outs. That 1-0 score would hold for the majority of the game.

Leody Taveras had the first and only hit for the Woodies off of Hernandez in the third. They would not managed another hit until Andretty Cordero and Yanio Perez led off the seventh with singles. Later in the inning, the Wood Ducks would load the bases with one out but failed to score the tying run.

Salem took advantage and added two runs in both the seventh and eighth innings - including another unearned run. Down East went down 1-2-3 in the ninth and dropped their 12th shutout loss of the season.

The Woodies look to regroup on Saturday at 6:05 p.m. with right-hander Jason Bahr on the mound. He will start opposite Kutter Crawford at Haley Toyota Field in Salem.
