Red Sox Shut Out Pelicans 2-0 in Sunday Finale
May 3, 2009 - Carolina League (CarL1)
Salem Red Sox News Release
Myrtle Beach, SC- Salem lefthander Jose Capellan dealt his top performance of the young season, hurling six shutout innings and leading the Red Sox to a 2-0 shutout victory over the Pelicans on Sunday afternoon. The Dominican southpaw struck out five Myrtle Beach batters and allowed just three hits before giving way to the bullpen in the seventh. Salem's bullpen, which has been the backbone of the ballclub through 24 games, dominated as usual, with Jason Rice (two innings) and Derrick Loop (one inning) setting down the Pelicans in order over the final three frames to preserve the staff's first shutout of the year.
With the win, Salem now has won three out of four following two straight losses to begin the six-game road trip. The 13-11 Red Sox head back to Virginia for a seven-game homestand, starting with a four-game showdown series with the Kinston Indians, whose 6-3 come-from-behind-win on Sunday also moved them to 13-11 overall on the season.
A day after pounding 10 runs on 16 hits, Salem mustered two runs on seven hits against Myrtle Beach pitching. Ryan Kalish sent a fly ball over the shallow left-field wall in the first inning for a solo home run, his second dinger of the year that gave the Sox a 1-0 edge. Two innings, later, following Zak Farkes' leadoff double, Kris Negron drove in the second run with a base hit to center field. Negron finished with three hits for Salem, batting leadoff for the second straight day. Meanwhile, Che-Hsuan Lin, who had been struggling at the top of the order prior to yesterday, batted sixth again and responded with his second straight multi-hit game. With two more singles today, Lin raised his batting average nearly .50 points over the last 24 hours, from .129 to .176.
Capellan retired the first eight batters he faced to start the game and did not allow a base hit until Jason Heyward singled with one out in the fourth. Capellan also yielded a pair of singles in the fifth, but induced a lazy fly ball off the bat of Donell Linares to finish the inning. After Capellan hit Freddie Freeman with a pitch with one out in the sixth, Red Sox pitchers combined to set down the final 11 Pelican batters without another baserunner. Rice struck out two batters in a perfect seventh before quickly working a four-pitch eighth. Derrick Loop struck out one in the ninth and lowered his league-leading ERA to 0.90. Loop has not allowed a run since the 12th inning on Opening Day (April 9th) against Frederick.
The Red Sox and Indians will square off for Southern Division supremacy at Lewis-Gale Field, a four-game set beginning Monday at 7:05. Salem will send righthander Seth Garrison to the mound against Kinston lefty Ryan Morris in the opener.
