Indianapolis Indians News Release

INDIANAPOLIS. -- PawSox batter's drew 10 walks and pounded out nine hits, while the bullpen combined for 4.1 scoreless innings of relief to lead the Pawtucket Red Sox past the Indianapolis Indians 7-5 on Sunday afternoon at Victory Field.

With the loss the Indians fall to 23-26 overall and 11-13 at home, while the win improves the Red Sox to 26-23 on the season and 14-14 on the road. The victory is the first for Pawtucket over Indianapolis this season and moves the seasons series to 2-1 in favor of the Tribe.

The Red Sox and Indians combined for 17 hits and 16 walks and saw every batter, except former Indians MVP Carlos Maldonado, reach base at least once in a three hour and 24 minute affair.

The Pawtucket bullpen was brilliant as RHP Jose Vaquedano (2.1 IP, 1 H, 1 BB), RHP Rocky Cherry (1.1 IP), LHP Javier Lopez (0.1 IP, 1 H) and RHP Marcus McBeth (0.1 IP) allowed just two hits in 4.1 scoreless innings of relief. Vaquedano was credited with the win to improve to 3-1 on the season, while Cherry and Lopez each collected holds and McBeth nailed down his third save of the season.

Pawtucket jumped out to an early lead with two runs in the first, led by DH Mark Kotsay, who led off the game with a base hit and eventually came around to score on a double play. CF Freddy Guzman also collected a base hit in the frame and came plateward himself on a triple by 1B Paul McAnulty.

Indianapolis would quickly answer with three runs of their own in the bottom half of the first. CF Andrew McCutchen started the scoring by driving the second pitch of the game over the left field wall for his fourth long ball of the year. The Tribe then tacked on two more runs when LF Jeff Salazar and 3B Neil Walker trotted home on a Pawtucket miscue.

The two teams then exchanged single runs in the second as Kotsay drove in 2B Travis Denker with an RBI single in the Red Sox half of the second and RF Garrett Jones brought Bixler home with a sacrifice fly in the Indians half of the frame.

Pawtucket then took over the lead for good with three two-out runs in the top of the fifth. Following back-to-back strikeouts by McAnulty and RF Chip Ambres, Denker and 3B Gil Velazquez drew back-to-back walks and then came around to score on a double by SS Iggy Suarez. OF Sean Danielson then drove in what turned out to be the game-winning run when brought home Suarez with a run-scoring single later in the frame.

Though the Tribe would rally with a run of their own in the fifth on a RBI single by RF Chris Barnwell, the PawSox would slam the door with an insurance run in the eighth on a run scoring single by Carter.

McCutchen (2-for-5, 1 R, 1 RBI) and Salazar (2-for-4, 1 R) each collected multi-hit games for the Tribe, while Kotsay (2-for-2, 1 R, 1 RBI) and Guzman (2-for-4, 2 R) turned in multi-hit performances for the Red Sox.

Tribe relievers Corey Hamman (3.1 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 1 BB, 3 SO) and Juan Mateo (1.0 IP, 1 SO) combined to allow just two hits, while striking out four in their 4.1 well pitched innings of relief. However, fellow Indians reliever Brian Slocum (0.2 IP, 2 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 2 BB, 2 SO) allowed three runs in under an inning of work and was charged with the loss to drop to 0-2 on the season.

Neither starter figured in the final decision even though Indians RHP Eric Hacker (4.0 IP, 5 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 7 BB, 1 SO) walked seven and allowed three runs in just four innings and Red Sox LHP Kris Johnson (4.2 IP, 6 H, 5 R, 3 ER, 5 BB, 2 SO) walked five and allowed five runs in 4.2 innings of work.

Indianapolis wraps up their four-game series with Pawtucket on Monday at 7:00 p.m. RHP Ty Taubenheim is scheduled to start for the Indians, while RHP Charlie Zink is expected to get the nod for the Red Sox.
