Red Claws to Participate in September 2 Expansion Draft

August 26, 2009 - NBA G League (G League)
Maine Celtics News Release

PORTLAND, ME - The Maine Red Claws, presented by Quirk Chevrolet, will take the first step towards building their roster for their inaugural season with the 2009 NBA D-League Expansion Draft on Wednesday, Sept. 2, 2009. The announcement was made by Red Claws President and General Manager Jon Jennings.

The Red Claws and Springfield Armor will select from available players from the 2008-09 Anaheim Arsenal and Colorado 14ers "Returning Player Lists." The Armor, as chosen by random drawing, will have the first overall pick, and the order of selection will alternate in each round. Following the conclusion of the draft, which will take place via teleconference, each team will submit their list of selected players to the league.

"This is our first opportunity to really begin formulating what our team will look like," said Jennings. "There is some tremendous talent available - Colorado was the NBA D-League champion. While many of these players may already be planning to play overseas this season, by drafting them we will maintain their rights should they decide to return to the league."

The Red Claws first selection will be announced by Effie Drew, a student at Portland High School and the winner of the First Fan Promotion Presented by First Portland Mortgage Corporation held earlier this year. Effie will be with Red Claws General Manager Jon Jennings and Head Coach Austin Ainge when they make the decision on the first pick and will have the opportunity to officially make the selection. Red Claws season ticket holders will be invited to participate in an informal gathering to listen in to the draft.

MAINE RED CLAWS: 2009-10 will mark the inaugural season for the Maine Red Claws. The NBA D-League team will begin play in November at the Portland Expo Building. The franchise is owned and operated by Maine Basketball, LLC, which is principally owned by Bill Ryan Sr., the chairman of TD Banknorth Group, and Bill Ryan Jr., owner and operator of Oxford Plains Speedway. Jon Jennings, a partner in Maine Basketball, LLC and former Boston Celtics assistant coach, serves as the team's president and general manager.
