August 26, 2009 - NBA G League (G League)
New Mexico Thunderbirds News Release
ALBUQUERQUE, N.M., Aug. 26, 2009 - The Albuquerque Thunderbirds and head coach John Coffino have agreed to terms that will keep him on the team's bench for the 2009-2010 season. Under Coffino, the team finished the 2008-2009 season with a 24-26 regular season record, finishing just two games out of the playoffs.
"Jackie and I are very happy that Coach Coffino has agreed to stay in Albuquerque to lead the Thunderbirds for the 2009-2010 season," said team owner Sam Bregman. "John devoted the majority of his summer to helping grow the team, reaching out to the community and scouting for the best players in the league. We are very grateful for his support. He cares deeply about building the Thunderbirds into a successful franchise, he loves this city and we know he has what it takes to lead the Thunderbirds to another championship."
Before taking over as the Thunderbirds head coach in 2008, Coffino served as an assistant under former T-Birds coach Jeff Ruland. Coffino also has extensive experience at the college level, having coached at Iona, Westchester Community College, St. Peter's and Niagra.
"I am excited and proud to continue as head coach of the Albuquerque Thunderbirds," said Coffino. "I'm very grateful for the continued confidence in my stewardship the Bregmans have displayed and their abiding support for professional basketball in the community they love."
NBA Development League rosters will not be set for a few months, but Coffino is already busy finalizing details for the team's upcoming tryouts. He has been working with the team throughout the offseason, and is committed to improving the franchise both on the court and in the community. "I am especially eager to continue building a thriving relationship with the local community, which has been enormously supportive and loyal; qualities I cherish," said Coffino. "I look forward to the best basketball season the Thunderbirds have enjoyed and the opportunity to bring a championship to a town that so deserves a successful basketball franchise."
