Red Bulls Eliminated from U.S. Open Cup, Falling 4-2 at New England

CAMBRIDGE, MA (June 12, 2013) - Despite goals from forward Fabian Espindola and midfielder Jonny Steele, the New York Red Bulls were eliminated from the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup, falling in a fourth round match against the New England Revolution, 4-2, at Soliders Field Soccer Stadium on the campus of Harvard University Wednesday evening.

New England took the lead in the fourth minute. Kelyn Rowe had the ball on the right wing and was able to drive it with his left foot past goalkeeper Ryan Meara and into the back of the net. Meara later kept the score within one with a string of diving saves on Ryan Guy, Gabe Latigue and Rowe.

New York tied the game in the 30th minute. Espindola was able to beat goalkeeper Matt Reis to a soft back pass by Darrius Barnes in the Revolution defensive end and knocked it into the empty net for his second goal of the competition in 2013.

Rowe doubled his tally and again gave the hosts the lead seven minutes later. The New England midfielder dribbled through the center of the field and ripped a right footed blast past Meara and into the goal's bottom corner.

The visitors nearly tied the game again moments after Rowe's second. Juninho's free kick bounced off a Revolution defender and Dax McCarty's one-timer went inches wide.

The Revolution doubled their advantage to 3-1 six minutes into the second half. A Barnes long ball was controlled in the box by Dimitry Imbongo, who brushed off a Red Bulls defender and poked it into the back of the net.

However, the Red Bulls were able to pull one back in the 61st minute. Eric Alexander was sprung through on the right wing and his cross to the back post was headed in by Steele. Twelve minutes later, Steele was the provider, putting a well-weighted ball over the top to an on-rushing Espindola. However, the Argentine could not get his volley on target.

New England wrapped up the result three minutes from full time. With New York pushed up looking for a third goal, Guy crossed it and Chris Tierney was there to slot it home from close range. The Red Bulls were reduced to 10 men when Brandon Barklage was issued a second yellow card in second half stoppage time.
