New York Red Bulls News Release
The New York Red Bulls used three different goal scorers to weather the storm and defeat Club Tijuana, 3-1, on Tuesday night in the second leg of the Scotiabank Concacaf Champions League Quarterfinals. New York advanced on a 5-1 aggregate over Club Tijuana.
With the win, New York advanced to the Scotiabank CONCACAF Champions League Semifinals for the first time in club history. The win secures a home match in the second leg of the semifinals against the winner of the Seattle/Guadalajara series, which has the second leg tomorrow night.
New York became the third MLS team in league history to advance in a knockout round of the SCCL tournament against a Liga MX opponent since 2008. Previously, Seattle advanced against Tigres in 2012-13, and Montreal won a series against Pachuca on away goals after two draws in 2014-15.
The Red Bulls shutout streak ended at 296 minutes across all competitions after Tijuana scored the game's first goal in the 10th minute.
Following Xolos goal in the 10th minute, New York trailed for the first time in 369 minutes of play of the 2018 season. The Red Bulls trailed just 18 minutes before Michael Amir Murillo crossed a well-time pass for Tyler Adams, who sent in the equalizer in the 28th minute.
With the game level midway through the second half, Bradley Wright-Phillips sent a cross from 25-yards out to the far post for Marc Rzatkowski, who redirected to the near post for the eventual game-winning goal in the 70th minute.
Minutes later it was Wright-Phillips again, but this time he found Alejandro Romero Gamarra, who scored the insurance goal in the 78th.
Adams scored his first career SCCL goal and just his third career tally across all competitions.
Two of New York's big offseason acquisitions, Gamarra and Rzatkowski, both scored their first career goals with New York.
BWP recorded his first career three-assist game as a Red Bull.
Wright-Phillips has recorded a point in five straight-straight matches across all competitions. Through the first five matches of 2018, BWP has tallied four goals and five assists.
Murillo tallied his first career assist as a Red Bull.
Florian Valot made his first career first team start with New York, making the start over Sean Davis, who was suspended due to yellow card accumulation.
Since Red Bull Arena was constructed in 2010, New York stretched their unbeaten SCCL streak at RBA to seven matches (5-0-2).
New York extended its unbeaten streak across all competitions to five matches and have outscored their opponents, 12-2.
The Red Bulls have scored at least two goals in four consecutive matches across all competitions.
New York has scored a goal in its first five matches of 2018. The Red Bulls have tallied at least one goal in nine consecutive matches, dating back to last season. The last time New York was held scoreless was on Oct. 15, 2017 against Atlanta United in a 0-0 draw.
The Red Bulls will face the winner of Guadalajara/Seattle in a two-leg series with dates and times to be announced at a later date.
