Record breaking season continues as Reading is Wild surpasses 400,000 books

Reading is Wild, a community program of the Moncton Wildcats, has reached an astounding record total of 414,095 books read in this, the 11th year of its history.

The records continue to be shattered by students of the four schools involved in this year's program, a literacy project sponsored by RBC and the Times&Transcript.

Week three numbers reached 30,674. Combined with the two previous week's total of 43,421, the amazing number of 74,095 books read has destroyed this year's goal of 47,000.

The individual school statistics for the third week of the program show, Bessborough/Uplands with a total of 7,918 books read, the year to date total of 25,068 while the goal for the year was 15,000. The Reader of the Week was Veronica Currier.

At Claude D Taylor School in Riverview, this week's total reached 6,282 books read, bringing the three week grand total to 14,801, that's 2,801 over target. The students selected as winners of a weekly Wildcats prize were, Laura Gibbs; Mitchell Briggs; James Murray and Isaak Aker. The Reader of the Week was Rebecca Wolthers who took every opportunity to read during free time.

At Magnetic Hill School students upped their total to 25,226 to date, surpassing their goal of 15,000, with 12,474 books read in the last seven days. The weekly winners were grade four student, Ben Connolly Gallant; from grade one, Mallory Anderson; Cody Brideau of grade eight and grade one student, Brock Forsythe. Sungmin Lee, a grade one student from South Korea was named Reader of the Week.

Not to be outdone, Hillsborough Elementary, all but doubled its five week total of 5,000 books read by hitting the 9,000 mark. This week's total was 4,000. Setting the pace was Reader of the Week, Matthew Nixon, while weekly winners were Peter Jonah, Dylan Edgar, Emma Llewelyn and Matthew MacBeath.

As part of the program, a ticket to a Wildcats game goes to all students taking part in Reading is Wild, with weekly winners receiving additional prizes.

Wildcats players are currently on a three game road trip in Quebec and will be back home on Sunday. On Tuesday morning the Wildcats will thrill their young fans with players visiting each of the four schools.
