Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins News Release
PROVIDENCE, R.I. - Colin McDonald scored the only goal of a six-round shootout as the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins rallied for a 3-2 win over the Providence Bruins on Friday at the Dunkin' Donuts Center. It was the fifth time this season Wilkes-Barre/Scranton had won when trailing after two periods.
The Bruins scored twice over a fifty-second span in the opening stanza to take a 2-0 lead into the first intermission, but the Penguins would slowly chip away.
Wilkes-Barre/Scranton cut Providence's lead in half when Geoff Walker got his team on the board at 8:01. Ben Street snapped a shot from the faceoff circle that goalie Michael Hutchinson slowed and Walker was there to continue the puck's momentum across the goal line for his 16th marker of the year.
As part of a third frame that saw Wilkes-Barre/Scranton outshoot Providence 10-1, Street wrapped his 20th goal of the season inside the post with 6:41 remaining in regulation.
After the overtime period failed to provide the final score, Penguins goalie Scott Munroe and Hutchinson were perfect through five rounds of the shootout. McDonald then beat the Bruins' netminder through the five-hole in top of round six and Munroe turned aside Jamie Tardif to give Wilkes-Barre/Scranton the win.
A tightly contested first period saw the Bruins go up 1-0 with 4:33 left until the intermission after a Penguins turnover at the Providence blueline. Munroe was able to stop Jared Stall on the ensuing 2-on-1 rush, but Kyle MacKinnon followed to whack in the rebound.
Less than a minute later, the Bruins found themselves ahead by two after a sneaky wrister by Josh Hennessy found the back of the net.
Munroe made 20 saves through overtime and all six stops in the shootout to go to 14-5-3 this season. The Penguins were 0-for-4 on the man-advantage and perfect on two penalty kills.
The Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins continue their road trip on Saturday, March 10 as they take on the Bridgeport Sound Tigers at 7:00 PM. For more information, call the Penguins at (570) 208-PENS or visit www.wbspenguins.com.
