Providence Bruins News Release
Providence, RI - The Providence Bruins fell to the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins 4-3 in a shootout this evening at the Dunkin' Donuts Center. Kyle MacKinnon and Josh Hennessy scored for Providence.
Looking to sweep the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins in their only two meetings this year and for their first win in five games, the P-Bruins came out flying. They easily exposed the Penguins weak defense and goaltending by dangling defenders and throwing shots at the shaky Scott Munroe. Their efforts paid off at 15:27 when MacKinnon collected the rebound off a rush from one of the P-Bruins' new additions, Jared Staal, and stuffed it past Munroe. Less than a minute later, right off a face off low in the Penguins' zone, Hennessy ripped a shot over Munroe's shoulder from the top of the circle. Kirk MacDonald and Ryan Button also assisted on the play that sent the P-Bruins into the locker room leading 2-0.
The momentum slowed slightly in the second period and the teams exchanged scoring opportunities and big hits in the opening minutes of the frame. The Penguins were finally able to break through the P-Bruins' defense at 8:01 when Geoff Walker put the Penguins on the board and cut the lead by one. The Penguins continued to crash the P-Bruins' net with shots, but Michael Hutchinson was solid between the pipes and preserved the P-Bruins lead going into the second intermission.
Providence opened the third period hungry for another goal. However, despite multiple quality scoring chances, the P-Bruins couldn't find the back of Monroe's net. Instead, Wilkes-Barre/Scranton tied the game 2-2 forcing the game into extra time.
After a scoreless overtime period, the teams headed to a shootout to decide the game. The first five rounds went scoreless until Colin McDonald found the back of the net on the Penguins' sixth attempt for the 3-2 SO win.
The team is on the road the rest of the weekend. The club visits Route 146 rival, the Worcester Sharks, on Saturday, before traveling north to Portland on Sunday to close out the weekend.
