Cleveland Monsters News Release
Going to extra time for the fifth straight game, Friday night the Lake Erie Monsters (30-25-2-4) saw their three-game win streak snapped in a 2-1 shootout loss to the Western Conference-leading Oklahoma City Barons (36-17-3-4) at Cox Convention Center in Oklahoma City. The Monsters - who have yet to beat the Barons in three tries this season (0-2-0-1) - are unbeaten in regulation in five straight games, four of which have gone to a shootout.
With the game scoreless into the third period, Evan Brophey gave the Monsters a 1-0 lead when he tipped a Patrick Rissmiller shot from the high slot by Barons goalie David LeNeveu. Barry Goers also assisted on the goal at 4:46 of the third for his first point as a Monster and first AHL point. Brophey's goal was his team-leading 16th of the season.
At 10:41 of the third period, Josh Green tapped in the rebound from a Magnus Paajarvi shot to tie the game at 1-1 for Oklahoma City.
After overtime failed to yield a winner, the Barons outdueled the Monsters in the shootout portion, scoring three times to the Monsters one goal; Rissmiller was the only Monster to score in the shootout frame.
Cedrick Desjardins (11-6-2) stopped 31 of 32 shots for the Monsters in 65 minutes, followed by two saves on the five shootout attempts. LeNeveu (15-9-3) stopped 26 of 27 shots for the Barons and stopped three of four in the shootout.
The Monsters and Barons meet again Saturday night, with the game beginning at 8:00 PM. All the action can be heard live on AM 1220 WHKW. The Monsters conclude their three-in-three weekend with a 5:00 PM game in San Antonio on Sunday; a game that can also be heard live on AM 1220 WHKW.
NOTES: The Monsters failed to score on the power play for the sixth straight game; they are 0-22 on the man advantage over that time... Conversely, the Monsters are perfect on the penalty kill over their last three contests, successfully killing off 11 opposing power plays over their last three games; the penalty kill was 4-4 Friday, including 40 seconds of five-on-three time for the Barons... With the shootout loss, the Monsters are 4-8-0-2 against the West Division... The Monsters are 10-3-0-3 since the All-Star break, and are now 13-15-1-2 away from Quicken Loans Arena, where the team has won seven consecutive games.
