Rebels Move to the Second Round; Win 3-2 in PA

The Red Deer Rebels are advancing to the second round of the Western Hockey League playoffs following their 3-2 loss over the Prince Albert Raiders Wednesday night. The Rebels swept the Raiders 4-0 in the best-of-seven series and are the first team to advance, the first time Red Deer has won a playoff since their 2011 first round sweep over the Edmonton Oil Kings. Red Deer fought back from a 2-0 deficit for the win and for 0-for-3 on the powerplay.

FIRST PERIOD

The Raiders took their first lead of the series at 5:19 on four-on-four hockey. PATRIK BARTOSAK made the initial save, but Mark McNeill was left alone on the right doorstep for his first of the post-season. Then, on a really nice tic-tac-toe, at 8:45 when Jayden Hart scored to give the Raiders a 2-0 lead. Prince Albert was all fired up and more while the Rebels struggled ... until: a rocket from CONNER BLEACKLEY went upstairs to make it 2-1.

SECOND PERIOD

Prince Albert, playing for their season, continues to play well in the early going. But the Rebels killed a 5-on-3 in the first five minutes. The Rebels tied things 2-2 when BROOKS MAXWELL scored his third of the playoffs with a howitzer that went in the top left hand corner at ... The Rebels, playing much better, led the 10-5 shot clock with five minutes left.

THIRD PERIOD

TURNER ELSON gave the Rebels their first lead of the night with an unbelievable goal at 10:51. Elson zoomed down the left wing to wiggle himself behind the Raider defence for the third Red Deer goal.

The Rebels outshot the Raiders 37-31 over 60 minutes.
