SANDY, Utah (Wednesday, July 8, 2009) - The Real Salt Lake Under-17 Team finished strong this morning in the 2009 SUM U-17 Cup at Dick's Sporting Goods Park in Commerce City, Colo., defeating the Columbus Crew 1-0 to capture third place in the third edition of Major League Soccer's annual youth competition. The win boosted the RSL U-17 Team's undefeated record in the tournament to 2-0-2, which also included a win over Toronto FC and draws with the Houston Dynamo and FC Dallas during pool play.
"Our staff was very impressed with how this team gelled together so quickly," said RSL Youth Development Technical Director Brian Johnson. "Being in the same situation we were in last year, having to combine kids from our Utah and Arizona programs with only two days of preparation, we have to give full credit to the players for all the hard work they put in over the last week and for representing Real Salt Lake proudly once again with another strong performance."
After both teams went scoreless through the first half of today's contest, Real Salt Lake would get the game's only goal courtesy of a pair of substitutes, as MF Donny Toia scored off a pass from MF Maikon Orellano in the 47th minute, the game-winning tally marking Toia's second goal in the tournament. The rest of the team rallied behind GK Carson Elliot to preserve the shutout and the one-goal advantage, the result securing RSL's third place spot in the tournament.
The third-place 2009 SUM Cup showing is just the latest in a year-long stretch of impressive performances for the RSL Youth Development system, including the RSL U-17s' run to the SUM Cup title last summer, the RSL-Arizona U-17 Team's US Club Soccer National Cup VII U-17 Super Group crown last July, and a respectable 0-1-2 showing in June's "M18 Mundial Clubes de Futbol Sub-18" tournament in Madrid, Spain.
