Real Salt Lake News Release
TUCSON, Arizona (Wednesday, February 7, 2017) - Real Salt Lake drew 1-1 with the San Jose Earthquakes in its second match against a Major League Soccer opponent in the 2018 preseason, earning its goal from FW Alfredo Ortuño in the 55th minute to secure the draw at Kino Stadium in Tucson, Arizona. Head Coach Mike Petke again fielded different lineups on either side of halftime, giving most players in his side 45 minutes of playing time.
The first half of action saw both sides with multiple half-chances around the edge of the area but neither side was able to break the deadlock before the halftime whistle blew. GK Nick Rimando was forced into two saves in the first stanza, keeping the Earthquakes off the board to secure the first half shutout.
The second half brought wholesale changes to the lineups for both sides as Petke made eleven changes at halftime. RSL broke the scoreless game when rookie FW Ricky Lopez-Espin broke down the left side in the 55th minute, placing a low cross towards the top of the penalty area just inside the box to an onrushing Ortuño who slammed home a curling effort inside the near post of San Jose's net. The Earthquakes equalized just five minutes later when Quincy Amarikwa headed home inside the six-yard box past GK Connor Sparrow.
Next up for RSL is a return to Utah from Tucson for two days of training in Herriman before departing for Orlando, Florida next Monday. While in Orlando, the team will face Orlando City SC on February 17 and New York City FC on February 22 to close out the second preseason road trip of 2018.
