HERRIMAN, Utah - Real Monarchs SLC have signed Real Salt Lake's two 2019 MLS SuperDraft picks Sam Brown and Kyle Coffee ahead of the 2019 USL Championship season, General Manager Dan Egner announced today. Both signings are pending league and federation approval.
Both players have spent time training during the 2019 preseason with RSL and Real Monarchs SLC.
"We are excited to add Sam and Kyle to the Monarchs," Egner said. "Both players spent extensive time training with the club during their collegiate careers, so we know we're getting two players that fit what we are trying to do and that want to be a part of and contribute to this club."
Brown spent four years at Harvard University where he started 61 of the 62 matches he appeared in during his time in crimson. The Ann Arbor, Michigan native contributed 12 assists in his time at Harvard, adding three goals to his name. During his senior season as a co-captain at Harvard, Brown earned All-Ivy League honors, earning a spot on the honorable mention squad, his third All-Ivy League postseason selection. Brown was named the Ivy League Rookie of the Year in 2014-15. Brown has previously spent time training with RSL and Real Monarchs of the USL Championship.
"I'm really excited to have signed with the Monarchs," Brown said. "This gives me a good opportunity to learn and grow under MartÃ-n Vasquez and the rest of the staff. I'm excited for the opportunity to grow and have the chance to move upward with RSL. I'm happy to be able to learn and grow with the team each and every day."
Coffee arrives at the club via the University of Washington where he played four seasons. Coffee made 74 appearances and 45 starts for the Huskies, scored 15 goals and contributed 9 assists. A native of Syracuse, Utah, Coffee played his club soccer for La Roca FC and featured for Syracuse High School where he became the first-ever division one college player in his school's history. Coffee previously spent time training with RSL and Real Monarchs.
"I'm really excited to be able to represent my hometown on the professional stage," Coffee said. "To represent Utah while playing for the Monarchs mean a lot to me. I've always watched the club's matches and to now have the opportunity to wear the jersey is amazing. I'm looking forward to contributing to the club both on and off the field and in the community and hopefully bring a USL Cup to Utah."
