Real Monarchs Come Back to Draw Sacramento Republic 1-1
July 1, 2015 - United Soccer League Championship (USL)
Real Monarchs News Release
Sandy, Utah (Wednesday, July 1, 2015) - Real Monarchs SLC earned a 1-1 draw against the Sacramento Republic on Wednesday in the first match of a doubleheader preceding Real Salt Lake's Open Cup match with the Portland Timbers at Rio Tinto Stadium. While the club battled back from a first-half deficit, it will surely rue a late missed PK that could have given the Monarchs the full three points for the second time against the defending USL champions.
FW Eti Tavares scored his second goal of the season and GK Eric Osswald had a highlight-reel sav in the second half to keep the Monarchs in striking distance, but they couldn't find the game-winner despite outshooting Sacramento on the night.
Sacramento had a pair of scoring chances early in the match, but nothing came of the threatening balls up the left side.
Then Republic FC broke through in the 19th minute. On a corner kick from the left side, Derek Foran got a touch to the ball to keep it alive at the far post and Justin Braun finished the play with a lunging shot to give Sacramento the 1-0 lead.
Real Salt Lake DF Chris Schuler appeared for the Monarchs for the second straight match after logging 67 minutes on Saturday against Arizona United. The veteran center back is returning from a knee injury that had him out of the RSL lineup since April 5. He played the first 45 minutes before coming off at halftime.
Two additional halftime subs for the Monarchs changed the tempo for the home side.
After knocking on the door early in the second half, FW Eti Tavares broke through in the 60th minute. Ricardo Velazco found Tavares with a ball over the top of his defender and his shot ripped off the far post and in for his second goal of the season to equalize the match at the hour mark. His last goal came on April 17 against Colorado Springs.
FW Max Rauhofer nearly added to the lead moments later when he took a pass in behind the Sacramento defense and his first effort was blocked by the on-rushing Republic goalkeeper and Rauhofer tried to put back the rebound, but missed it just wide.
The Monarchs had an opportunity to add to the lead in the 82nd minute when Rauhofer got the ball at the top of the box and tried to flick a pass beyond the Republic defense and it caught the arm of his marker, drawing a penalty call by the referee. However, Rauhofer hammered his shot off the crossbar and the match remained knotted at 1-1 and that's how the match would finish.
Real Monarchs will remain at home for its next match on July 11 against the Austin Aztex. The Saturday match kicks off at 7 p.m. MT.
