Reading Fightin Phils News Release
The Reading Fightin Phils took a brief lead after going down early in Saturday's contest. However, the Portland Sea Dogs stormed back to claim a 9-3 victory.
Jonathan Guzman, Chris Sharpe and Sal Gozzo each had two hits apiece for the R-Phils. Reading only struck out twice in the contest, and not before the ninth inning.
Portland scored two runs in the top of the third inning. A double and a single each plated runs and the Sea Dogs led to 2-0.
Sharpe walked to lead off the bottom half of the third. He scored on Gozzo's double. Vito Friscia walked and Jack Conley singled to load the bases. The Fightins tied the game on an RBI groundout from Ali Castillo.
In the bottom of the fourth inning, Guzman and Sharpe each hit singles with one out. Gozzo stepped to the plate with runners at the corners. He laid down a sacrifice bunt to score Guzman and give the R-Phils a one-run lead.
The Sea Dogs retook the lead with two runs in the top of the seventh inning. Nick Sogard walked and advanced to second on a balk. Another walk put runners at first and second base. A single pushed both runners across the plate.
Portland tacked on four more runs in the top of the eighth on four singles and one run in the ninth to take a 9-3 lead.
Sharpe hit a triple with one out in the bottom of the ninth inning but he was stranded and the game ended.
Adam Leverett started on the mound for the R-Phils. He gave up two runs on four hits and struck out five batters.
Julian Garcia pitched the next two innings and took the loss in Saturday's contest. He allowed two runs on one hit and struck out one.
Austin Ross came on for the next 1.1 innings and blew a save opportunity. He gave up three runs on three hits.
Bubby Rossman got the final two outs of the eighth inning. He gave up two hits and one run.
Mike Adams pitched the top of the ninth inning. He gave up one run on two hits but got all three outs on strikeouts.
